Three top swimming prospects to join T-Birds
VANCOUVER - Three of Canada's best young swimmers are coming to UBC.
Luke Reilly (Richmond, BC), Jonathan Brown (Airdrie, AB) and Stefan Milosevic (New Westminster, BC) will all be competing for the Thunderbirds men's team when they begin their university careers in the fall of 2013.
All three are members of Canada's Junior National Team and competed at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships last summer in Hawaii
"We are very excited that Luke Reilly, Jon Brown and Stefan Milosevic have chosen UBC and the Thunderbirds to further their swimming careers and attain their academic goals,” said UBC head coach Steve Price. “All three are outstanding young men and with their versatility over many events, they will have an immediate impact on the men's team and the CIS swimming. The all have the potential to represent Canada at the senior ranks.”
Reilly isn't a stranger to the campus, having spent his youth swimming with the UBC Dolphins club.
The R.A. McMath Secondary student recently competed for Canada in Australia at the New South Wales State Age Championships. Reilly won silver in the 1500-metre freestyle and the 200m and 400m individual medley races.
He currently has the second fastest 200 and third fastest 400 individual medley times recorded by a Canadian this year.
Reilly is the nation's third-ranked swimmer in the 1500m free and the fourth fastest Canadian man in the 400m freestyle and 200m breaststroke events.
Brown comes to UBC after honing his skills with the Nose Creek Swim Association in Calgary. He took eighth place in the 200m IM at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships last summer.
Stefan Milosevic is another local athlete, who is a member of New Westminster's Hyack Swim Club.
He was eighth in the 200m freestyle event at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships last year. Milosevic also won a bronze medal in the 4x200m free relay after swimming the opening leg for Canada's 'A' team. He was the anchor on Canada's 4x100m relay squad, which placed fourth.
Only one Canadian man has recorded a better time than Milosevic in the men's 200m freestyle so far this season.
"We will be a young team next season with only one senior on the roster and with the likes of Coleman Allen, Luke Peddie and Evan Broderick still far from their peak potential we will be a force for some time," said Price. "We feel fortune that these top three recruits have looked to UBC as the place to reach their potential."
UBC is home to one of Canada's most decorated men's swimming programs. The Thunderbirds are the defending Canadian Interuniversity Sport champions and have won 13 national titles in all.
