Langley Olympians Swimmers One Step Closer to the Olympic Dream
Two veteran Langley Olympians Swim Club swimmers –Bailey Herbert (18 yrs) and Hugh McNeill (17 yrs) – will be participating in the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Trials scheduled for June 19-23, 2021. This selection event is to select swimmers for the postponed 2020 Olympic Games scheduled for July 23-August 8 2021.
Both Bailey Herbert and Hugh McNeill are Swimming Canada Carded Athletes, meaning that they are provided financial support by Swimming Canada and Sport Canada to assist in their pursuit of high-performance swimming.
Bailey Herbert was a two-time International Junior Team member for Canada. She participated in the 2018 Junior Pan Pacific Games in Fiji and in the 2019 World Junior Championships, Hungary. She also represented Team BC in the 2020 LEN (European) Swimming Cup in Luxembourg.
Hugh McNeill represented Team BC in the 2020 LEN (European) Swimming Cup in Luxembourg.
Due to COVID-19, the 2020 Olympic Games were postponed to 2021. After multiple postponements, the Canadian selection meet was finalized to be held from June 19-23, 2021. The 5-day trials meet will be held in Toronto, Ontario in the semi-traditional Heats and Finals format in Long Course Metres for 50-100-200m events and timed finals in 400-800-1500m events. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the selection event will only cater to a limited number of swimmers. Given Bailey’s and Hugh’s resume and swimming times, both veteran athletes were part of the small group of athletes Swimming Canada selected to participate in the 2020 Olympic Trials.
Hugh McNeill will be swimming 100 Backstroke, 1500 Freestyle, 400 Individual Medley, 200 Backstroke and Bailey Herbert 100 Breaststroke, 200 Individual Medley, 200 Breaststroke, 400 Individual Medley.
Langley Olympians Swim Club swimmers and coaching staff appreciates the opportunity for swimmers to be able to train long course metres at the Walnut Grove Pool. Most in the swimming community agree that long course swimming is very different to short course swimming and to train long course in a must. The ability to access Long Course programming from January 2021 helped enable swimmers like Bailey and Hugh accomplish their long fought dreams and goals.
