Martin Zubero Head Coach

Martin Zubero has been with the Episcopal AmberJax since May 2014 where he serves as the head coach of the high school and club programs.

Zubero, an ASCA Level 5, coach, was the Head Age Group Coach at Patriot Aquatics in Orlando from 1998 to 2002. He coached the team to the Florida Junior Olympic long course team title in 2000 and was named Florida Swimming Age Group Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2000, and ASCA Age Group Coach of the Year for Florida in 2001. Zubero was a speaker at the 2000 ASCA World Clinic covering "Age Group Coaching Design" and "How to Coach Backstroke to Age Groupers."

From 2002 -2010, Zubero was the Head Age Group and Assistant Senior Coach at the Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida. During that period, Zubero was a coach for the 2003 World Championship team for Malaysia and the 2007 Pan American Games for the Netherland Antilles. The Bolles won the men's and women's state title all five years he worked with the high school program along with the high school mythical championship in 2005.

In 2011, Zubero worked for the Marlins of Raleigh where he worked with the Sr and Age Group programs based out of the Ravenscroft School in North Raleigh and most recently, Zubero was the Aquatics Director for the Spartan Aquatic Club in Orange Park.


Competitively, Zubero is the former short course and long course world record holder for the 200 meter backstroke. His long course 200 meter backstroke record stood for over eight years before being broken by Lenny Krayzelburg in August 1999. His most memorable moment came when he won the Olympic gold medal in the 200 meter backstroke at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. He also was the World Champion in the 200 backstroke in 1991 and in the 100 backstroke in 1994. Collegiately, Zubero competed for the University of Florida and was the 1990 and 1991 Southeastern Conference Swimmer of the Year. At the 1991 NCAA Championships, Zubero broke the NCAA record in the 200 Individual Medley and 200 backstroke and was named NCAA Swimmer of the Year.

Zubero is a 2004 inductee into the International Swimming Hall of Fame as well as member of the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame. Martin is a graduate of the University of Florida where he received his BS in Recreation. He is married to his wife, Loretta, and they have two children, Lily (13) and Finn (7).
