Coaches and Directors
Head Coach Lucas Ferreira joined Gwinnett Aquatics in 2011, and was our Head Age Group Coach until August 2019, when he took a sabbatical to travel and visit other swim programs and his family in Brazil. He returned to the club in April 2020, and took over as Head Coach in August of that year, and now is in charge of our Senior program, and also works closely with all the staff.
Under Lucas' leadership our Age Group program showed consitent improvement in VCC Scores, IMX Scores, and in our showing at Age Group State Champs, including a 1st place finish amongst medium teams in July 2019. Lucas was also selected Georgia's Age Group Coach of the Year in 2019.
Prior to his move to Atlanta, Lucas was the Head Age Group Coach for the Ames Cyclone Aquatics Club in Ames, IA, where he was also recognized as Age Group Coach of the Year 2011. He went to Iowa after earning his Master’s degree in Health and Human Performance at the University of Memphis.
In addition to being a ASCA Level 3 certified swim coach, Lucas is a certified strength and conditioning specialist. He is from Brazil, where he coached swimmers from Novice to Masters level and got his BS in Physical Education/Teaching Education.
Hugh began coaching as a head USA Swimming coach in 1982. After a long stint coaching high-schoolers, in August 2020 he shifted roles to coach both Gold and Prep, and continue as the club's CEO.
Before starting Gwinnett Aquatics in 2004, Hugh was Head Coach at Dynamo-Mountain Park for 7 years, where he trained Senior National, Junior National and Zone qualifiers, an Olympic Trial finalist and over 30 National top-16 swimmers. Before coming to Atlanta, Hugh coached at the Upper Montgomery County YMCA in suburban Washington DC, Tulane University in New Orleans, and Holt Swim Club in Lansing, MI.
Hugh has achieved level 5 status, the highest level of accreditation, from the American Swim Coaches Association. He earned a B.A. from Michigan State and an M.A. from Tulane. His wife, Karin, works as a behavioral scientist at CDC. They have two children, Elliane and Jacy.
Jacy swam for Gwinnett Aquatics all the way back in 2003 when it was still part of Dynamo and he was just five years old. After 13 years of Ga-Ga he then went on to swim at Goucher College in Baltimore where he was a captain and multi-year conference finalist, graduating in the middle of the pandemic in 2020. He joined our staff late that same year, and has picked up more and more roles and he continuously grew into coaching. He's currently our lead coach for Sr3 and Junior Team, also assisting with many other groups.
Caitlin returns to GwinAq as an assistant coach, having previously swum for the team throughout high school. She has 15 years of lessons experience and 4 years of coaching experience. While she has worked with beginners to Masters level swimmers, she is currently working with the Senior 3 group, and helping with Prep and Gold at GwinAq.
Andrea joined the GwinAq staff in 2011. She now runs numerous winter clinic and works with Pre and Junior teams. Andrea got involved in swimming though her kids participation and volunteering for local summer league teams, and has been the head coach for Cricket Hill and is currently the head coach for River Oak.
