As an athlete and coach, Aaron's journey has spanned every level of swimming. His experiences in both capacities have ranged from local city meets and junior rec. leagues to representing Indiana University's Men's Swim team as an athlete and coach. His dedication and skill have even earned him the rare honor of being one of only a handful of Americans to be named to the United States National Team as both an athlete (2010) and coach (2016 - Lilly King & 2020-21 - Mikaela Jenkins).

In 2013, Aaron took a momentous leap, transitioning from an athlete to a full-time coach, assuming the helm of the renowned Newburgh Sea Creatures program. Through his emphasis on athlete growth and expanding community programs, Aaron's efforts became a success as he helped develop two of the Tri-state's most celebrated athletes: Olympic gold medalists Lilly King and Mikaela Jenkins. Simultaneously, he expanded swim lessons and recreational swimming programs from 20 when he took over to 200+ eager participants—changing lives through the magic of water.

As his journey progressed, Aaron's passion for teaching swim lessons flourished, revealing a pressing need in the community for a service that could save lives. In the spring of 2023, his belief of serving the community with this critical need called him to create the Gold Medal Swim Academy. Using the relationships he cultivated through his experiences as a swimmer and coach, Aaron assembled a staff of the highest quality swim instructors in Southern Indiana.

With enthusiasm and dedication, Aaron Opell continues his mission, sharing the joy and wonder of swimming with all who seek to embrace the water.
