Coaches Corner
Last month I received an email inquiring about my perspective on mid-season tapers and championship relay selection. Last week I presented my stance on resting in season and this week I will explain how relays are chosen.
If all things are equal the four fastest athletes will be on our A relay, the next four on our B, and so on. But as we know all things are not equal and everything is subject to change. I will try to explain some variables that may come into play and some that may not.
One instance where our fastest may not be on the A relay is at Divisionals. This is primarily with our senior group but possibly with our younger age groups that have a lot of depth. The Divisional meet allows for two relays per age group. If we have 8 athletes that when divided up equally could potentially both go under the state cut we will try to balance the relays.
Another situation occurs when someone’s fastest time is done in a tech suit. Let say athlete A’s best time in season was done at a meet where they chose to wear a tech suit. Athlete B’s best in season time is slightly slower than athlete A, and athlete B wore a regular suit. This also assumes athlete B’s non suited time is faster than athlete A’s non suited time. In this situation athlete B will likely be chosen ahead of athlete A.
There may also be times when athletes may be moved between relays at a meet. If we have multiple relays at a championship meet and one athlete is having an exceptional meet or one is not performing as we had hoped there could be changes between being on an A or B relay. Once the determination for relays has been made, barring an injury, those athletes selected to be on relays will be on relays. It just may not be the one originally planned.
Finally, championship relays will not be determined until after our last regular season team meet. For us this season, our last meet is the CON Last Chance meet. Any times posted at a subsequent time trial will not be used to determine relays.
CON IMXtreme Invite/Concord High School/Jan 24-26
The meet info for this meet is coming out tomorrow. Our deadline for committing is tonight, Jan 5. Also, please note our goal for this meet is that our swimmers receive an IMX score (or an IMR score for our 8 and under swimmers). Here is a link to the USA Swimming website that explains what the IMX meet format is.
USA Memberships
We will need all of our athletes that have not done so already, to renew their USA Swimming memberships. Here is the link. From my experience with my own athletes just purchasing the membership will initiate the transfer process.
If you qualify for the Outreach Program email me and I will send you the link you will need to use for registrations.
If you have any questions about any registration issues you can reach out to me or our team/business manager Kelly Laneman ([email protected])
Fall and Winter Meet Schedule/Dates of Meet/Location/Deadline to commit
This is our tentative meet schedule for the fall and winter. We may add meets if we find ones that fit our club’s needs. There will be two different dates listed with each meet The first date listed is the day(s) of the meet and the second date is the deadline to commit.
Swimmers wanting to compete will need to commit to those meets. The deadlines will be based on deadlines that were set in previous years. They may change once the meet hosts posts the meet information. When committing to multiple day meets, if the option to select the days you want is not available, leave a message in the notes section stating the specific days you would like to attend.
Some meets will be marked with an * and those will require swimmers to meet minimum time standards. You can view all pool locations on our website under the "Pools" tab.
