Coaches Corner

This week I was asked how I chose events for championship meets when athletes have multiple cuts.  The process is fairly simple.  For Divisionals I chose the events an athlete is closest to making a state cut.  Those events take priority.  I then try to balance the events across the days of the meet. Here is an example of how I pick between events for Divisionals. Swimmer A is 2 seconds off the state cut in the 50 free and the 200 free, the 200 free would get priority.  The average needed to drop per 25 would be 1 full second for the 50 and .25 seconds for the 200.  So while exactly the same amount of time they are closer in the 200.

For the State Championship meets I use the results from the last two state meets of the same course as a guide.  I look for the approximate average time to place in the top 16 or top 8 in each event.  I choose the events our athletes have the best chance in scoring.  I then try to balance the events across the days.

Our goal is for our swimmers to swim the maximum number of events allowed and keep the events as close to equal each day.

IA Jr. Superstar Invitational/Rolf’s Aquatic Center ND/February 15 & 16

The deadline was set for this evening but the information has not yet been posted.  We will keep our meet commitment system open until it is.

Missing Jacket

I meant to put this in last week’s email and it slipped my mind.  There was a  team jacket that came up missing at the IA meet a couple of weekends ago.  If anyone found an additional jacket in their swimmer’s bag please bring the jacket to me at practice.  Thanks!

USA Swimming Officials Needed

This is a follow up to the email sent on 1-15 we still need one more official!

If you are a registered USA Swimming official we need your help at the IHSAA Penn Girls Sectional on Saturday February 8.  We need four officials to observe the meet so times can be used to qualify for national meets.  Starting this year we are no longer allowed to use regular high school meet results to qualify for meets above Senior State.  Speedo Sectionals now require the swim to be performed at any USA Swimming sanctioned meet or an observed meet like high school sectionals or state.  If you are able to help, please let me know.

USA Memberships

We will need all of our athletes that have not done so already, to renew their USA Swimming memberships.  Here is the link.  From my experience with my own athletes just purchasing the membership will initiate the transfer process.

If you qualify for the Outreach Program email me and I will send you the link you will need to use for registrations.

If you have any questions about any registration issues you can reach out to me or our team/business manager Kelly Laneman ([email protected]

Fall and Winter Meet Schedule/Dates of Meet/Location/Deadline to commit

This is our tentative meet schedule for the fall and winter. We may add meets if we find ones that fit our club’s needs. There will be two different dates listed with each meet The first date listed is the day(s) of the meet and the second date is the deadline to commit

Swimmers wanting to compete will need to commit to those meets. The deadlines will be based on deadlines that were set in previous years. They may change once the meet hosts posts the meet information. When committing to multiple day meets, if the option to select the days you want is not available, leave a message in the notes section stating the specific days you would like to attend.

Some meets will be marked with an * and those will require swimmers to meet minimum time standards.  You can view all pool locations on our website under the "Pools" tab.
