DCST Takes 3rd in Boys Area Meet
The Kishwaukee YMCA / DeKalb County Swim Team (DCST) took third place in the 2009 Boys IL / MO Area Championships. DCST finished with 708.5 points which was just 13 points behind second place Leaning Tower YMCA (Niles, IL) and 177.5 points behind Area Champion Edwardsville. The DCST Boys team has shown great improvement in the past year. This year’s team scored 82 more points than the 2008 team, and cut the gap between themselves and 1
st place Edwardsville from 384.5 in 2008 to 177.5 this year. Furthermore, of DCST’s 59 swims in the preliminary session, 43 of them (73%) were faster than their qualifying swims from the District Championships. This session was one of DCST’s most impressive sessions of the season.
Daniel Hein was DCST’s leading point producer by winning all three of his individual events with IL / MO Area Meet Records. He won the 9 – 10 year old boys 50 yard Freestyle, 50 yard Backstroke and 50 yard Butterfly events. In his relay event, Hein teamed up with Tyler Schultz, Austin Bockman and Jacob Bjork to finish 2
nd in the 200 Freestyle Relay. Schultz, Bockman and Bjork were joined by Alex Wang in the 200 yard Medley Relay which finished in 10
th place. Wang added a 7
th place finish in the 50 yard Breaststroke. As group, the 9 – 10 Boys took home the 3
rd place Age Group Trophy.
The highest placing and highest scoring age group on Sunday for DCST was the boys ages 15 – 21 which finished in 2
nd place. Grant Alef, Michael Gordon, Taylor Roose and Cory Page placed 2
nd in the 200 yard Medley Relay. In the Free Relay, Page teamed up with David Gordon, Sam Seneczko and Chad Thompson to finish 3
rd. In the individual events, Grant Alef won the 100 yard Backstroke, finished 2
nd in the 500 yard Freestyle and 7
th in the 200 yard Freestyle. Michael Gordon had an impressive day by taking home two 2
nd place finishes in the 100 yard Butterfly and 200 yard Individual Medley events, and a 3
rd place finish in the 100 yard Breaststroke. David Gordon earned 3 top 6 finishes with a 3
rd in the 500 yard Freestyle and a 6
th in both the 200 yard Freestyle and 200 yard Individual Medley events. Thompson earned a 7
th place in the 500 yard Freestyle and an 8
th place in the 100 yard Backstroke. Page and Roose both had an 8
th place finish in the 50 yard Freestyle and 100 yard Butterfly respectively.
DCST earned a 3
rd place trophy in the Boys ages 13 – 14 division. This was a pretty impressive feat since DCST only had 4 swimmers participating in this age group. These four swimmers, Marc Dubrick, Josh DeDina, Kei Ishimaru, and Josh Page, took home 3
rd place honors in the 200 yard Medley Relay. Ishimaru and Dubrick each added 3 top 8 finishes in their individual events. Ishimaru went 4
th in the Individual Medley, 4
th in the 100 yard Butterfly and 7
th in the 200 yard Individual Medley, while Dubrick went 6
th in the 500 yard Freestyle, 7
th in the 100 yard Backstroke, and 8
th in the 200 yard Freestyle.
In the boys ages 8 and younger division, Garrett Sims, Brett DeConinck, Riley Lohse and Patrik Smith took 6
th place in the Medley Relay. Sims and Lohse then swam with Tyler Crown and Stephen Gannon to finish 19
th in 100 yard Medley Relay. Smith led the way in the individual events with a 6
th place in the 25 yard Backstroke and an 8
th place in the 50 yard Freestyle. DeConinck earned 8
th place honors in the 25 yard Breaststroke.
Michael Carlson, Ryan Lindsey, Ryan Schultz, and Dylan Powers finished in 5
th place in the 11 – 12 year old boys 200 yard Medley Relay. In the Freestyle Relay, Phillip Custsinger, Carlson, Lindsey and Powers placed 12
th. Ryan Schultz had a very productive day with a 4
th place in the 50 yard Breaststroke, a 5
th place in the 200 yard Individual Medley, and an 8
th place in the 50 yard Backstroke.
