Coaches and Directors
JT has been coaching swimming for 11 years, both as a USA Swimming Club Coach and currently as the Head Swimming and Diving Coach for St. Joseph's Academy in Cleveland. He brings an enormous amount of energy and excitement to the pool deck. JT's devotion to his swimmers is evident in his swimmers continued success and passion for the sport of swimming.
Betsy (Bare) Tietjen, Age Group Coach: Coach Betsy started
swimming at 3 years old and has been
coaching since 2001. She attended Hawken upper school and swam with
Jerry Holtrey. Betsy has been
coaching the Mayfield Middle school team since 2012 (minus one year
at Hawken middle school). She
has also been an assistant coach at Hawken Upper, has coached
various age/ability groups at LESD 2001-
19, and came to GLSS in June 2019. She loves working with the young
swimmers and teaching them
about the ins and outs of the sport. Fundamentally, coaching
swimming is about making kids excited
about the sport, by keeping it fun as well as giving them the tools
to master the basics.
Betsy is the Coordinator of Experiential Learning at Gilmour
Academy. When Betsy is not working, she
lives in Mayfield Hts. with her sons, Conor & Freddie, and
husband Kurt. Her daughter, Mareike, attends
OSU. She reads a lot of history books, loves working out,
travelling, playing volleyball, camping, hiking,
and kayaking!
We are incredibly happy to welcome Jake Lutz to the coaching staff. Jake will be taking over the Fins group. Jake comes to GLSS with a wealth of knowledge. Jake swam at Notre Dame College and was a 3 time NAIA National Qualifier. He specialized in the 200 & 400 IM. Jake's primary joy is watching his swimmers grow to their fullest potential. His coaching philosophy is simple: If you don't practice correctly, you won't race correctly. Focus on FORM and speed will come.
Hi, my name is Adam and I am excited to be back coaching for
GLSS. I have spent most of my
life either in the water as a swimmer, or the past 25 years as a
coach! I am currently the
Orange Middle and High School head coach. Prior to that I spent six
years as both an assistant
and then head coach at Hawken and LESD, guiding the teams to 5
State team titles, as well as
numerous individual State Champions. I have coached all levels of
swimmers, from the very
beginners, to Olympic Trial Qualifiers, and enjoy all of it!
Prior to my coaching career, I was an age group and high school/
college swimmer myself. I
swam for LESD and Hawken growing up, and then competed for both
Indiana University and
Ohio State.
My coaching philosophy is one that incorporates proper technique
and endurance in all four
strokes, while developing strong legs and kicks, both with the
strokes and off the walls! If I have
one bit of advice for all swimmers, it is to find the joy in the
sport. It is a hard sport, but finding
happiness in what you are doing makes it very enjoyable!
During my free time I enjoy spending time with my family and trips
to the beach. I am a big
Cleveland sports fan (for better and worse), and enjoy playing golf
when the weather allows. As
a lifetime learner, I have also recently developed a joy in the
kitchen with cooking.
