General information

Our Advanced class is 90 minutes long.  As indicated by the class title, this group will be working on an advanced level of skills by building off of the base that has been created throughout Beginner I, Beginner II and Intermediate.  Just like Intermediate it is common for it to take students awhile to master the skills in this level, and a large amount of patience and determination is required.  It is here that we begin to work on putting skills together in combinations in addition to working towards the achievement of more challenging skills.  

Class structure is:

  • 15 minutes of warm-up and stretching followed
  • 15 minutes at each of the four women's competitve apparatus
  • 15 minutes at the trampoline and it's surrounding stations.  

Testing

Advanced is the final level to include testing.  Testing will take place in weeks 7-10 with the students receiving a level recommendation from the coach on week 10.  Below you will find the skills that will be tested for each event.  In order to pass advanced students need to be able to successfully perform each of the skills listed, on their own, a minimum of two consecutive turns on two consecutive weeks.  This shows us that the student is proficient in the skills taught and has enough consistency to move on and begin working towards the next set of skills.  Students must pass advanced before they can register for pre-team.  This ensures the safety of the gymnast and helps us to provide a positive, successful gymnasts experience for each child.

Vault

  • squat through: hands go on the vault and block off as feet tuck through the hands to the floor without touching the vault
  • free squat: jump from board to standing on vault without touching hands, arms should circle and lift to ears
  • front handspring: feet come from the springboard over the top of head inverting the body so the gymnast passes through a handstand before landing on the mat on their feet

Beam

  • Full turn: turning all the way around on the ball of 1 foot and stepping in front; turn should finish facing the end of the beam student was looking at when starting the turn
  • Round off dismount: starts in a lunge, hands reach to the end of the beam and the feet kick up and over like a cartwheel with feet coming together in the middle then turning the kips to face the beam upon landing
  • Front to back cartwheel on the low beam: start & finish facing opposite ends of the beam

Bars

  • squat on jump to high bar and catch: the student casts away from the bar, supporting with their arms as they lift the hips up and put their feet on the bar between the hands before releasing the bar to stand up and jump to catch the high bar
  • long hang pull over: back pull over from a swing without the feet touching the floor  
  • sole circle 1/2 turn swing: cast to straddle & swing, kick feet off and turn to face other way switching hands during the turn, swing through the bottom of the bar

Floor

  • Back walkover: progression from the back bend - kick over; one foot starts in front, student then reaches hands back to the floor while lifting the foot out in front over the top followed by the second foot before standing up and finishing in a lunge with arms by ears 
  • Front walkover on the floor or front handspring on tumble trak: 
    • front walkover: starts in a lunge like a handstand but athlete kicks feet over the top one at a time finishing facing the same direction as the start with one foot in front of the other
    • front handspring: moves quickly through the handstand, blocking off the hands when upside down, and landing on both feet at the same time with hands by ears and head back
  • Handstand pirouette: handstand changing the hands so that the students turns 1/2 way around on their hands without falling out of the handstand
    • it is very common for students to cheat on this by kicking up like a cartwheel so their hands are already partially turned, make sure they start it like a handstand with both hands facing forward
    • there should be two hand movements when done correctly
