Learn To Skate USA

The Owatonna Skate School is a non-profit organization.  Our mission is to promote and provide recreational opportunities in the sport of ice skating in Owatonna and surrounding communities.  We also seek to develop an individual skater's potential with coaching, leadership, and a supportive environment.  The OSS skates at the Four Seasons Centre in Owatonna, MN.  We offer group Learn to Skate Beginner Classes, Basic Skills, Learn to Skate Hockey, and classes to learn the fundamentals of skating.

 

Which Class Should My Skater Register for?

If you or your skaters are new and have never skated before please sign up for the following. 

  • Ages 3-6: Snowplow Sam
  • Ages 7-12: Basic Skills 1-2
  • Ages 13 and up Adult/Teen

  • Snowplow Sam 1-4 - Ages 3-6: Designed to develop preliminary coordination and strength necessary to move on skates. Snowplow Sam 1 is for new skaters, not skating independently. Snowplow Sam 2-4 skaters MUST be able to stand, march and glide independently.
  • Hockey: Fundamentals of hockey skating, skaters will learn to move faster and be more agile on the ice. All elements will be taught without a stick or puck.
    • Pre Requisite: Pass Snowplow Sam 3 or Basic Skills 2
      • Hockey 1-2: skaters will focus on control, backward skating, and stopping.
      • Hockey 3-4: Designed for those skaters that have passed Hockey 2. Skaters will focus on control, edges, crossovers, and stopping. 
      • Hockey Power - Designed for skaters that have passed Hockey 4, have great skating control and need that extra agility in their skating skills.  Skaters will focus on speed, turns, backwards quick skating, and pivots.
  • Basic Skills For Ages 7 and up: These six levels of the program introduce the fundamental skating moves forward skating, backward skating, stops, crossovers, and turns.
    • Basic 1-2: Designed for skaters with little or no skating experience. Skaters will focus on forward/backward skating and stopping.
      • ​After Passing Basic 2 skaters can move on to Hockey 1-4 or Basic Skills 3-6 
    • Basic 3-4: Designed for those skaters that have passed Basic 2 or Snowplow Sam 4. Skaters will focus on backwards, turning, and introduction to spins.
    • Basic 5-6: Designed for those skaters that have passed Basic 4. Skaters will focus on edges, crossovers, and stroking.
  • Figure Skating Jr Club - Aspire - Pre-Free Skate & Free Skate: Designed for those figure skaters that have passed Basic 6. Skaters will focus on footwork, spins, and jumps.
