Letter to the Club: Creation of a 5th Competitive Group - Advanced
Dear SSC Families,
It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that I write to you today to notify you of the creation of a 5th competitive training group here at SSC. For many years the club has operated with a 4-group structure, and recently, our club has grown quite a bit. With many new athletes joining and moving through our program at the younger levels, we have been forced to expand out to utilizing additional facilities more frequently to manage the sheer size of the groups we train here at SSC. We are so thankful for all of you and your continued commitment to the program to allow us to do this!
Our 5th group, Advanced, will fall between the Juniors Group and the Seniors group and will be geared toward building up the technical and physical requirements at the Senior Level, educating athletes on our team training philosophy, and aims to provide a meaningful and effective training platform for athletes who would otherwise be training in the same group for 4+ years. This new Advanced group will be Headed by Coach Evan Byrnes. We hope that this addition serves to create continued incentives and more frequent “achievements” by allowing for a platform in which the younger athletes can continuously receive promotions throughout their athletic careers, and continue to be challenged at each level, progressively, by the content, physical demands, and character building lessons implemented. The creation of this group also aims to allow for better understanding and facilitation of goal-setting, qualification times, pacing, race strategy, sportsmanship, periodization, etc. just to name a few.
Additionally, in creating this 5th group, we are able to review and renew our standards and protocols for move ups at every group level. The new group standards that we have detailed and will be utilizing in the future are as follows:
Please note that all of these standards aim to provide the individual and their families a more broad understanding of the objective requirements of each level. There will always be some degree of subjectivity, and outliers within the program as many athletes receive a late start to the sport and could demonstrate the need for more training volume quicker than is possible to complete the required events. In all cases, group Coaches reserve the subjective right to review individuals on a case by case basis for move ups. With these new changes, there will be no downward movement or demotions of individuals from their current group placement.
Each season, these requirements will continue to be reviewed and adjusted in a way that is most fair and serves the Sachem Swim Club community in the most practical and meaningful way possible. Each training group will continue to receive opportunities to work together, additional team amenities, resources, and special events, etc.
We hope that this change in structure allows for the best possible outcome in all of our athletes and can help to facilitate continued growth to our team. The Advanced group will begin its practice on January 02, 2023 and will be added into our weekly practice schedules moving forward. Additional information about these groups and group standards will be available on our website and will include these highlighted standards, recommended training equipment, etc. Individual move up emails will be sent out in the very near future.
Thank you again to our wonderful SSC Members and Families for making this all possible. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns.
See you at the pool!

They are made with soft materials and wide toe-boxes. The blades are short, wide, and come with a heel strap rather than a boot, which helps with maximizing torque in the water, quad activation, minimizes cramping and foot pain, as well as heps to create a more natural kick. We have had many SSC Swimmers begin using these fins and hope that they are of interest and help to many more.
