Goal Setting Meeting Saturday, May 4th, 10:00 - 11:00 am
Hello Swim Families!
Please set aside some time for a special goal setting session following practice on Saturday, May 4th.
We will have one hour in the classroom at Genesis where we will host a special guest, Karan Bhatia, a Staff Therapist at the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) department at K-State. Kharan is interested in helping our athletes with important topics such as goal-setting and race preparation. Below is Kharan's own introduction.
My name is Karan Bhatia and I am currently working as a Staff Therapist at the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) department at K-State. I received your contact information from Tina Steffensmeier who is currently my clinical supervisor. I graduated last summer from Ball State University with dual Master’s degrees in Sport and Exercise Psychology and Clinical Mental Health Counseling. During my time at Ball State, I gained applied experiences working as a Sport Psychology Consultant for Division I and Division III student-athletes. I am reaching out to propose the incorporation of sport psychology skills into your athletic program to provide student-athletes with a holistic approach to their athletic development and to improve the overall performance of the program. The work I am proposing to do will be supervised as I continue to collect hours towards my Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) certification from the Association of Applied Sport Psychology (AASP). The services I can provide are listed below:
Individual Level
- Assessment of individual mental skills and areas for growth (e.g., performing under pressure, confidence, concentration/focus, motivation, and more).
- Training in individual mental skills (self-talk, stress/competitive anxiety management, visualization/imagery, individual goals, and more).
Group Level
- Support in creating a healthy, productive team culture (e.g., norms, motivational climate, teambuilding, and team bonding)
- Building team cohesion (e.g., team goals, roles, camaraderie)
- Leadership skills
- Communication skills
- Conflict Resolution skills
Coach Reid and Coach Myles will begin having goal setting meetings with athletes that parents are encouraged to attend. Kharan's classroom sessions will provide valuable foundational knowledge regarding goal setting and mental preparation/race-readiness, and eventually, visualization.
We are very lucky to have this opportunity and hope you can attend.
While all members are welcome to attend, swimmers in the Platinum and Blue groups will find this information most valuable; goal setting is important at all ages, though we understand the setting might be a lot for our youngest athletes to take in.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you,
-Coach Reid
