Summer 2024 Week 1: Technical & Conditioning Focus
Week 1: June 3 – June 7
Technical Focus: Body Position, Breath Timing, Starts & Turns
Conditioning Focus: Aerobic Endurance
Hello Swim Families!
This is an exciting time… we are starting our outdoor season at City Park Pool!
City Park Pool is a 50-meter by 25-yard pool, in other words, an Olympic pool.
The Platinum and Blue groups will swim long course (50 meters) from 5:45 – 8:00 am, Monday through Friday, with Wednesdays being short course (25 yards) practices to work on speed and power. Please arrive early as we will be getting in the water promptly at 5:45 am.
The White, Minnows, and Summer League groups will swim short course (25 yards) from 10:50 – 11:50 am, Monday through Friday. This is due to technical skills being easier to master and maintain in short course, which is the foundation of all fast swimming and the primary emphasis of the White, Minnows, and Summer League groups.
Speaking of technique, this week we will be focusing on body position, breath timing, and starts and turns. Maintaining a high body position is the foundation of success in competitive swimming. Achieving an appropriately timed breath while swimming is also critical. Generally speaking, “late breathing” is considered a bad thing, though there can be variants in butterfly and even breaststroke, but I will resist the temptation to ramble here!
In addition to these technical aspects, our more advanced swimmers will focus on aerobic endurance. Long course is a different animal than short course, as we’ve been swimming the past 9 months, and we gotta get our lungs (and legs) in shape! But don’t worry, all workouts are scalable to meet every level of ability on the team!
I hope you are as excited as I am to begin our 2024 outdoor season.
Please let me have any questions, and I’ll see you at the pool!
