Summer 2024 Week 2: Technical & Conditioning Focus

Reid Carlson

Week 2: June 10 – June 14

Technical Focus: Alignment, Recovery, Breath Timing, Starts & Turns

Conditioning Focus: Aerobic Conditioning

Hello Swim Families!

Our first week is in the rearview and wow was it fun! Our first swim meet of the season is also behind us and our home meet, the Little Apple Invitational, is fast approaching—can you believe it is this weekend?!

Though it is only our second week of the summer season, Summer 2024 is in full swing!

This week, our technical focuses will home in on body and head alignment, recovery, as in, what the arms do as they’re moving forward in the strokes, breath timing (this will be a very common theme this summer) and starts and turns (you’ll see these a lot too).

Our more advanced swimmers will focus on these technical aspects as well as aerobic conditioning. Basically, practices will increase by 5 to 10 percent in volume over last week for swimmers in the Platinum and Blue groups.

Finally, I want to let everyone know that there is no need to “rest” before our swim meet. Please come to practice on Friday! Every swim practice is important and serves a purpose. “Resting” or “saving up” to increase performance in a competition by skipping practice is a myth I would like to dispel. Older swimmers may taper before a championship competition, and I will explain that process in a later email. Until then, please just know that no one will swim faster this weekend by taking Friday off—we’ll be working on starts and turns, which are super important racing details!

Be prepared to have fun and swim fast this weekend!

See you at the pool!
