Sunflower Games: Everything You Need to Know

Reid Carlson

Hello Swim Families!

Here is a run-down of everything you need to know about the Sunflower State Games which will take place on Sunday, July 20.

First and foremost, during warmups, swimmers must enter the pool using a 3-point entry. What that means is, a swimmer must sit down on the gutter, easing themselves down with one hand as an anchor (point 1), then sit their hips down on the pool deck/gutter (point 2), and then use their other hand to ease them into the water (point 3). This is a new imitative sweeping across all of USA Swimming, and swimmers can be disqualified for jumping or diving into the pool upon entry during warmups.

Timeline:

  • 7:45 AM: Facility Opens
  • 8:30 AM: Warmups Begin
    • Warmups are OPEN, meaning we must secure our own space, and we will almost certainly be sharing our warmups lanes with strangers.
  • 9:15 AM: Meet Begins
  • 1:45 PM: Anticipated end of competition.

The Sunflower Games awards medals—gold, silver, and bronze—to the swimmers that finish 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in their respective events and age groups. However, unlike most swim meets, these awards are not given to a coach. Instead, everyone must pick up their own awards.

Coaches Reid, Myles, Meg, and Ryan will be present at the meet.

This meet is short course yards—the same venue we train while at Genesis.

If a swimmer misses a race, there is no opportunity for a redo.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and I'll see you at the pool!
