GNST Relay Team Breaks Three Midwestern Swimming Records
GNST Relay Team Breaks Three Midwestern Swimming Records
Lincoln, Nebraska - March 21, 2011 - Three, long standing Midwestern Swimming relay records have been broken by Greater Nebraska Swim Team’s 11-12 year old girls relay team.
Emma Vertin, Dannie Dilsaver, Linzie Kreizel, and Caroline Theil competed in the 2011 Midwestern Short Course Championships in Elkhorn, Nebraska.
The girls first broke the 19 year old 400 yard medley relay record at the 2011 Schroeder A+ meet in Wisconsin, only to drop more time at Midwestern Championships, resulting in a time of 4:19.00. The 400 medley relay consists of 100 yards each of the four competitive swim strokes; backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle.
Because of their aggregate times, all four knew they had a shot at besting the 400 yard free relay record (set in 1999). They succeeded with a time of 3:51.72, beating the old record by over 2 seconds. There wasn’t time for celebration; however, they all had individual swims to think about.
“It’s races like these, at eight o’clock at night, on day three of a grueling prelim/final competition, that keep me coaching after 50 years.” Said head coach, Cal Bentz, after having his picture taken on the medal stand with his relay team, winners of the 200 free relay. “They each had to average 26 (seconds) each to break the record.”
Their time in the 200 freestyle relay, 1:45.79, beat the old record (also set in 1999) by only one one-hundredth of a second, but still managed to prove their coach right, again.
