Coaching Staff
DJ Johnson Head Coach and Program Director

DJ brings a wealth of experience to the BlueFins. She works primarily with the athletes in the Senior program but also shares her knowledge with the swimmers in the BlueFins Junior programs by working with them periodically.

DJ joined the BlueFins staff in 2011. Prior to joining us DJ spent 20 years at Penfield High School coaching the girls team and as boys coach at East High School for 9 years. During her time at Penfield and East she coached a number of athletes that qualified for the state meet and of those 2 were state champions and had All-American consideration times.

DJ’s competitive swimming background includes being a 12 year member of the Webster Swim Club (which later became the Webster BlueFins) where she was a club record holder, including one as a member of the 200 Medley Relay which stood for 32 years. She also swam varsity for 5 years at Webster Thomas High School where she was Section V Champion in the 200 IM. DJ completed her competitive career at Nazareth College. Highlights of her time at Nazareth include a conference championship in the 400 IM, being named All-American 3 times and competing in NCAA nationals. DJ was later inducted into the Nazareth College Hall of Fame in 1998.

While not at the pool, DJ spends her time teaching in the Rochester City School District, where she has been since 1986.

Rob Wahl Assistant Coach

Rob has been a coach with the BlueFins since 1998, working initially with the Junior / stroke development groups. Over time, he transitioned to the Senior Development group, developing athletes for advancement to the Senior program while assisting with that program level as well. In September 2009, Rob took over as Head Coach and while in that role he worked primarily with the Senior swimmers in addition to providing oversight and direction for the entire BlueFins program.

In 2023 Rob stepped down BlueFins head coach to assume an assistant coach role so that he could join the SUNY Brockport Men’s and Women’s swimming and diving staff and split time between the programs and have an impact on more swimmers.

Rob’s philosophy in athlete development is based on his background in engineering and quality. To maximize each swimmer’s potential, he believes it is vital to focus on stroke development and proper muscle memory in the early years. Once a solid foundation in the mechanics has been built, working on speed is the logical next step in the program and becomes the focus, along with technique refinement, as the swimmers mature in their development

Over the years, Rob has had the opportunity to coach many exceptional athletes who have qualified for USA Swimming Speedo, NCSA Jr National, USA Swimming Futures, USA Swimming Jr National, USA Swimming Senior National meets and US Olympic Trials. Additionally, many have become NYS High School Section V champions, NYS High School State champions, NCAA qualifiers, NCAA meet participants, High School and NCAA All-Americans, High School, Section V and College record holders, as well as significant contributors on various college programs. Rob received the Niagara LSC Senior Coach of the Year Award for the 2020-21 season in recognition for the performance of the BlueFins senior athletes.

In addition to USA Swimming and NCAA coach membership, Rob is affiliated with the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA), having attained level 3 performance and level 4 education certifications. He is currently working towards ASCA level 5 education certification.

In addition to his USA Swimming credentials, Dennis is also an ASCA Level 2 certified coach.
