4 Meets, 2 weeks, 1 TEAM!
What an exciting two weeks we had for the Mariners. We capped off our exceptional season with four Championship meets that saw several best times, top finishes and records broken.
We began our two-week journey traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina with 40 swimmers for Sunkissed Junior/Senior Championships. Our team finished seventh overall with over 90% of our qualifiers earning a spot in the finals. We had several top 8 finishers while at Sunkissed. Our top 8 finishers were:
Atharva Aiyer: 8th pace 100 breast, 6th place 100 fly, 5th place 200 fly, 5th place 200 breast
Jack Gehlmyer: 4th place 500 free, 7th place 200 free, 3rd place 200 IM, 3rd place 100 IM, 1st place 100 back
Henry Herbst: 8th place 100 IM (team record), 5th place 50 back, 5th place 200 breast
Derek Knoll: 3rd place 50 back, 7th place 200 back, 7th place 50 free, 8th place 100 free
Caroline Kopytek: 8th place 50 back (team record), 8th place 50 breast (team record)
Jonathan Montesano: 3rd place 50 fly (team record), 1st place 50 back (team record), 2nd place 100 fly, 4th place 50 free, 4th place 200 fly, 6th place 100 IM, 3rd place 100 free
Roger Rice: 6th place 50 breast
While at Sunkissed an additional team record was broken aside from those listed above. Congratulations to Jack Cotnoir for breaking the 15-18 50 fly record with a time of 24.66
While the 40 Mariners competed in North Carolina, Hannah Wilson was competing at Speedo Sectionals Championships in Ithaca. Hannah competed against teams from all over the East Coast to earn several top A Finals finishes. She finished 3rd in the 1650 (team record), 8th in the 400 IM (new team record), 5th in the 500 free (new team record), 5th on the 200 back (new team record). In addition, Hannah also broke the team records in the 200 IM and 200 free.
After Sunkissed and Sectionals were completed, Anuthra Abeysinghe traveled to Greensboro, North Carolina for the 2025 YMCA Short Course National Championships. Henry competed in the 100 breast and time trialed the 200 IM and 100 free. Anuthra competed in the 200 breast and 100 breast as well as time trialing the 200 IM and 100 Free. Anuthra finished the meet with a perfect, 4 for 4 best times in all his events as well as breaking the team record in the 200 breast and 100 breast.
As YMCA Nationals concluded, Alexia Morales Aizpun began competing for the Mariners in Rochester, New York at the Eastern Zone Age Group Championships. Alexia earned a place in the finals in 3 of her 4 events. She swam to a 7th place finish in the 11-12 50 back, 14th place in the 200 fly and 9th place in the 100 back. Alexia broke a 26-year-old record in the 100 back with a time of 1:03.58.
Over the course of 14 days of competition at four different meets we had 14 team records broken. Several that have been standing since the 90s! Way to go Mariners! We are so proud of all you for your tremendous hard work and dedication to the program!
