Coaches and Directors
Kevin Carney has been passionate about competitive swimming since he was seven years old. As a member of Aqua Gems Swimming, he was a multi-event Speedo Sectional finalist. He received All-American consideration as part of the 400 free relay team that finished second overall. His impressive swimming career continued at Lebanon Valley College, where he broke 13 school records and earned five medals at the Mid Atlantic Conference championships.
Kevin began his coaching career at Lebanon Valley College, assisting with the club program that trained at the pool. After graduating, he returned to Aqua Gems, serving first as an assistant and then as the head coach for six seasons. He then coached the senior group with the North Jersey Barracudas for another six seasons. Kevin’s swimmers have qualified for Speedo Sectionals, Futures Championships, NCSA Junior Nationals, and Open Water Nationals throughout his coaching career. His swimmers have placed in the top 3 at Speedo Sectionals, top 8 at NCSA Junior Nationals, and top 10 at Futures Championships.
Kevin believes in a swimmer-centered coaching philosophy, where swimmers actively participate in their training plans to create the best environment for success. He values hard work combined with fun, aiming to create lifelong memories and friendships for his athletes.
Living in Denville, NJ, Kevin brings a wealth of experience from his role as a Special Education teacher at a private Special Needs school and his prior coaching positions. He is currently an ASCA Level 3 coach working towards achieving Level 4 certification. Kevin is committed to fostering a positive and challenging environment for all swimmers.
Asheley is entering her seventh year coaching competitive swimming. She loves that each year manages to be different and allows her enjoyment of the sport to grow. Having always participated in sports it was natural for her to continue her passion and study something similar in college and later continue to work in the field. She believes hard work always pays off and is always willing to learn something new. In her free time, she is either spending time with her family or reading.
Michael Bradley has been part of the coaching staff since 2021 and is excited to lead the Silver Group this season. Our philosophy centers on the athletes, emphasizing the development of good habits for success both in the pool and in life. We'll focus on water efficiency and training across various strokes and distances. Along the way, we aim to swim fast, have fun, and build lasting friendships.
Michael is a member of the American Swim Coaches Association, holding a Level 5 Certification. He also coaches the Madison Master Mariners Program and is a certified US Masters Swim Coach, Level 2. Since 2019, he has served as the Head Coach for Oratory Prep in Summit, NJ, leading his teams and swimmers to the Meet of Champions.
A former Jones Beach Lifeguard and collegiate swimmer at Hartwick College, Michael lives in Madison with his wife, Gina, and their children, Matthew and Grace. Grace, a former Mariner, attends Providence College, while Matthew is a graduate of TCNJ.
Kate Hay, a Chatham, NJ native, has been a dedicated member of the Madison YMCA staff since 2011. She began as an aquatics instructor, transitioned to competitive aquatics in 2014, and has also held positions in the Performing Arts Department and Member Services. Kate, a proud alumna of Chatham High School's class of '09, represented both her high school and the West Essex YMCA in swimming. Go, Mariners!
Evan has been swimming since the age of 3 and started competing at 7. From New Providence, his passion for the sport began competing for, and later coaching, the New Providence Community Pool Summer League team. During his junior year of high school, he played a pivotal role in guiding his high school team to its first sectional title. Entering his sixth year as a Mariners coach, he is passionate about helping kids grow as swimmers and people. He believes in hard work, and having fun and can often be found giving a thumbs up. Outside of the Mariners, he is a Kean University student and a Milwaukee Bucks fan and enjoys spending time with friends and family.
Thomas has been involved in the world of swimming since the age of 8 when he joined the Morris Township summer league team. He went on to swim competitively for 4 years at Morristown High School, and another 4 years at Montclair State University. His coaching career began at the same place as his swimming career where he became Assistant Coach for both Morris Township pools, Ginty and Streeter pools. Thomas coached with Morris Township every summer from 2010 to 2019. He joined the Mariners coaching staff in 2014 and still enjoys stepping onto the pool deck to help athletes be the best swimmers they can be. Thomas has also lifeguarded, taught swim lessons, and worked as Associate Aquatics Director for MAY from 2016 to 2020. In addition to having a passion for swimming, Thomas has a passion for filmmaking and always enjoys a good Bruce Springsteen song!
Tom swam competitively from age 6 through college. He swam for the Union Elks, Union Boys Club, Cranford Comets, Seton Hall Prep and Seton Hall University. Tom works full time underwriting surety bonds and has served the Mariners in a volunteer coach capacity since 2011. He has been happily married to Cathi since 1990, and they have three children; Luke, Terence and, Claire. His son Terence swam for the Mariners for several years.
Michael Siva has been employed in the aquatics department of the Madison Area YMCA since October 2021 as a Lifeguard and Swim Instructor. He has been influential in teaching aquatics, contributing to the growth of our swim enrollment from 300 students in 2021 to currently over 500. Michael teaches private and group lessons to individuals of all ages, including special needs the safety and life skill of swimming. Michael demonstrates and trains members in all four major swim strokes including diving. He supports our youth swim program, helping multiple swimmers aspire and transition to the Mariners swim team. Michael teaches the importance of team sports, helping his students set personal goals while building self-confidence along the way.
Michael enjoys spending free time outdoors with his family. His hobbies include hiking, biking, swimming in the ocean, and golf to name a few. I believe living an active lifestyle improves one's physical and mental well-being.
Kristen swam competitively for Lafayette College in Easton, PA, a Division I program, where she broke two team records and was a finalist in the Patriot League. Her passion for swimming led her to Northern Illinois University, where she served as a Graduate Assistant Coach while earning her Master's degree in Sports Management.
With seven seasons as an Assistant Coach at George Mason University, Kristen was instrumental in coaching the women's program to a CAA Championship title and mentoring two NCAA Division I finalists. She further honed her leadership skills during her tenure as Head Coach and Assistant Athletic Director at the College of St. Elizabeth.
Kristen also has five seasons of experience as an Assistant Coach with the North Jersey Barracudas, where she continued to develop her philosophy of coaching the whole person. She is deeply committed to creating a safe, productive, and fun environment for all athletes, firmly believing that every athlete has the potential to succeed. Kristen's dedication to holistic coaching and her impressive coaching background makes her a valuable addition to the Mariners swim team.



Yean Jimenez has been a vital part of the YMCA for over 13 years, holding various positions in the aquatics program, including lifeguard, swim instructor, aquatic supervisor, and aquatic director. His YMCA journey began at the West Side YMCA in New York City, where he served from 2011 to 2021. During this time, Yean also worked as the Assistant Head Coach for the 12 and under swimmers, leading them to qualify for the NY State YMCA Championships and YMCA Nationals three times.
Currently, Yean is the Senior Director of Aquatics at the Madison Area YMCA, where he continues to promote water safety, competitive swimming programs, and community development. His extensive experience and dedication have made him a key figure in the aquatics community.
Yean is not only a dedicated professional but also an accomplished athlete. He began swimming at age 6 and joined the national swimming team of the Dominican Republic in 1998. He represented the Dominican Republic in numerous international competitions, including the Pan American Games (2003, 2007) and the Central American Games (2002, 2006-2018), winning silver and bronze medals for the Dominican Republic in triathlon. He also qualified for the Triathlon World Championship and Olympic trials starting in 2008.
From 1998 to 2019, Yean was a prominent member of the Dominican Republic National Triathlon Team, participating in ITU international races. His athletic journey continued in the United States, where he became a member of the USA Triathlon National Team in 2018. His notable achievements include securing 3rd place in the USA Triathlon Nationals (2019, 2023) and winning NJ State Champion titles (2022, 2023). He is currently preparing to compete in July 2024.
Yean remains actively involved in both triathlons and aquatics. He is committed to achieving new milestones and contributing to the development of future athletes. He leverages his extensive experience to help young and new swimmers grow and succeed in the sport, embodying the YMCA’s mission to nurture potential and promote healthy living.
Yean Jimenez is a dedicated and accomplished professional with a distinguished career in aquatics and athletics. His long-standing commitment to the YMCA, coupled with his international athletic achievements, underscores his passion for fostering talent and promoting community development. As the Senior Director of Aquatics, Yean continues to inspire and lead, making a significant impact on the lives of aspiring swimmers and athletes.
