My Philosophy

I have loved being in the water my entire life. I started swimming on a team when I was three years of age. My father was the head coach, and my mother was the team manager of the Tide Landers Aquatic Club, a swim program that provided support and development to youth swimmers in the Long Beach community. My water polo career began when I was six years old and it has provided me a lifetime of adventure and education. After my college career ended in the U.S. I started an international professional career that lasted over twelve years. I played for the best teams and was coached by some of the most respected coaches in the world. My playing career took me to four different countries where I learned to play with teams at the highest level of competition. The experience was priceless. It gave me a well-rounded, holistic approach to coaching, and an appreciation for different cultures. I developed my own coaching philosophy from the influence of my teachers, and through trials and errors in my own coaching career. In a nutshell, my coaching is rooted in knowledge of the game, trust, the building of relationships, and the reaching of goals through solid dedication. Throughout my tenure at Chadwick, I have developed a great understanding and respect for the necessary balance between athletic and academic pursuits, and I always incorporate the players’ individual wellness in my approach to training and playing. Structure, both in the water and in the classroom, teamwork, and discipline, allow student-athletes to develop the creativity and self-confidence that they will need to excel in the sport and in their lives after college. I believe in the power of relationships and knowing student-athletes as people. I believe that the establishment of common goals builds collaboration. As much as I value my knowledge of the sport, and

the physical and technical aspects of it, the older I get the more I appreciate the positive, life altering experiences of being a student-athlete at a prestigious institution. I strive to lead with trust, integrity, and mutual respect in order to help student-athletes reach their goals in and out of the pool by becoming the best possible version of themselves while being part of a dedicated and reliable community.

Championship.

Justin Gonzales

I began playing water polo when I was 12 years old for LB Shore Aquatics. In 2010, I graduated from Long Beach

Wilson HSwhere I played and swam for all 4 years. Both at the club and high school level I was fortunate to have high level coaches which includes 3x Olympian Robert Lynn, 1x Olympian Chi Kredell, and one of the most successful coaches in high school water polo, Tony Martinho. Following high school, I competed at the community college level for Golden West College where I was a part of the team that won the 2012 CCCA State

My coaching career started in 2014 for PVWPC where I helped transform the club into being nationally recognized for producing ODP level athletes. Currently at the club level I am the 18u/16U Director for LB Shore Aquatics, and in this past year I have recruited and gained 31 high school aged athletes, spanning 6 different high schools from the LA and OC areas.

In 2016, I joined the Chadwick School as the assistant coach for boys’ and girls’ aquatics programs and in 2018, I took over as the Head Coach for the Boys and Girls Swim teams. Coaching alongside my old club coach, Robert Lynn, has been an absolute privilege and I am forever grateful for my time spent as his assistant coach.
