Getting Started as a Stroke and Turn Official

2025 USA Swimming Rulebook

As a proud parent of an MLST swimmer, you have a unique opportunity to get involved and make a real impact on your child’s swimming experience! One of the most rewarding ways to support your swimmer is by becoming a certified Official at swim meets. Officials play a crucial role in ensuring competitions run smoothly and fairly, by upholding the technical rules of swimming.

Officials are present at all meets to ensure the event is fair and consistent for every swimmer. By getting trained and certified through USA Swimming, you’ll be helping to maintain the integrity of the sport while spending time close to the action. As a Stroke and Turn Official, your job is to observe swimmers during their races — from their first arm pull after entering the water to the final touch at the finish. You’ll ensure that each stroke, turn, and finish follows the rules. If something’s off, you’ll document the infraction to maintain fairness for all competitors.

At MLST, we are committed to having a team of trained and certified officials who are registered with Pacific Swimming. Clinics are held throughout the year at various locations, and we encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities to get involved.
