Meet #2 Recap
Good afternoon Firefish,
Congratulations on your second win of the season! In a meet that was close throughout, the Firefish pulled ahead at the end to improve our record to 2-0 ! Next week, we’ll take on Southampton at their pool. Southampton goes undefeated almost every year, but this is our year to beat them!
If you haven’t already, please go in and declare for the meet. We’ll need every swimmer there if we want to take down the Swordfish at their own pool! I’ll send out a reminder email tomorrow, as well as an incentive for us to win the meet (similar to this week’s banana costume 100 IM)!

Best Times!
We had 65 swimmers who dropped time in 2 or more events, as well as a ton of swimmers who swam an event for the first time! You can find a list of outstanding swimmers (those who achieved two or more best times) at the following link:
Unfortunately, the computer isn’t letting me create an “improvement report”, meaning I can’t make the time drops section that I normally do. I’ll try to make up for this with extra Special Shout-outs this week!
- My first shout-out goes to all of the mites who swam breaststroke for the first time in a meet! Breaststroke is by far the hardest stroke to do legally, and I’m proud of every swimmer who gave it a shot, even if they did DQ! We’ll keep working on breaststroke in the coming weeks and give it another shot in Meet 5!
- I’d also like to give a shout-out to everyone who swam in their first meet! You guys helped propel us to another win!
- Special shout-out to all of our relays! After most relays were canceled last week, I could tell our swimmers were fired up for these at the end of the meet. You guys brought the hype at the end of the meet!
- Sylvia Pace, who was worried about swimming freestyle–until I told her she could jump in and do backstroke (in freestyle, there aren’t many rules… you can pretty much do whatever stroke you like!) Sylvia hopped in, swam backstroke, and dropped 6 seconds off her freestyle time!
- Jane Garitz, our senior swimmer who jumped in at the very last second to swim on our B relay! Thanks for being ready to help out, Jane!
- All of our 15-18s! Westwood has an incredibly strong group of senior swimmers, and even with a ton of missing swimmers, our 15-18s stuck with theirs and scored a combined 261 points. Well done guys!
- Victoria Sessa, who missed the last meet due to injury, and still managed to come back and drop time in all three of her individual events, plus anchor the 11-12 A relay–making her a quadruple winner!
- Alice Moore, who went X for the first time… and did it in two events! Alice was on fire this meet, and it shows in her times!
- Special shout-out to our mites who swam breaststroke legally for the first time!

As I said before, breaststroke is the hardest stroke to do legally, and you guys picked it up very quickly! Well done!
- Lastly, I’d like to thank everyone who volunteered! The meet ran exceptionally smoothly, and wrapping up at 9:45 is not bad at all!
Firefish, you guys crushed it at this meet! Going in, we knew it was going to be a close meet, and each and every swimmer did their part to propel us to a win. It might not always seem like it, but swimming is a team sport, and you guys clearly understand that! This week, we’re going to work on our butterfly, as that will be the stroke of the meet on Monday at Southampton. Looking forward to seeing you all at practice!
GO FIREFISH!
Coach James
