Three More DIAA Qualifying Times and Multiple Personal Bests as SCHS Swimmers Split Against Lake Forest
Boy’s Meet Wrap-Up - Sussex Central: 97, Lake Forest: 51
The SCHS Golden Knights boy's swim team hit the water for just the second time this week as they faced off against the Spartans of Lake Forest. The Golden Knights emerged victorious as they would start the afternoon by winning the first eight events of the meet. The relay team of Austin Campbell, Breyden Wright, Ronan Dutton and Isiah Brittingham would place first in the 200 medley relay in a time of 2:26.32. In the 200 freestyle, SC would go on to place 1st (Tyler Herbster), 3rd (Jackson Dutton) and 5th (Caleb Ceballos) to jump out to an 18 - 10 lead over the Spartans.
Senior Jordan Pritchett faced off against Lake sophomore Kyle Surguy in the 200 individual medley and turned in a season best time of 2:49.69 to win the Knight’s 3rd straight event and earn six points in the process. Freshman Breyden Wright kept his undefeated individual event streak alive by touching the wall first in the 50 meter freestyle with a time of :27.01. Sophomore Jackson Dutton placed fifth in the event with a personal best time of :39.40.
Wright was up next for the Golden Knights in the 100 meter butterfly, and he turned in a DIAA qualifying time of 1:07.01 en route to a first place finish. The Golden Knights would then get the brooms out and sweep the 100 meter freestyle by grabbing 1st, 2nd and 3rd place points. Rookie junior Isiah Brittingham took first place with a time of 1:15.94, holding off a late charge from rookie sophomore Michael Sullivan who touched the wall in 2nd place with a time of 1:16.57. Campbell grabbed 3rd place, finishing with a time of 1:20.42.
Harmon, Pritchett and Ronan Dutton would hit the water next for SC in the 400 meter freestyle. Harmon would win the distance event with a time of 5:24.63 while Pritchett would place 3rd in a personal best time of 5:29.47. Dutton placed 4th with a time of 6:18.60. Herbster would lead off the Knights’ 200 free relay with a personal best and DIAA state qualifying time of :27.77 to give his team clean water en route to a 1st place finish. SC’s “B” relay team of Hunter Branco, Ceballos, Brittingham and Pritchett would place 3rd in the event.
Sophomores Campbell and Ceballos would place 2nd and 3rd for the Knights in the 100 meter backstroke, with Harmon and Ronan Dutton finishing 1st and 2nd in the 100 meter breaststroke, with Dutton’s time of 1:35.90 representing a personal best for the senior. In the final event, the 400 meter freestyle relay, Herbster, Sullivan, Pritchett and R. Dutton touched the wall first in 4:49.39 with Campbell, Brittingham, Ceballos and J. Dutton placing 3rd in 5:50.23.
The Knights are back in action Thursday, 12/19 at Sussex Academy when they face the 2019 Henlopen Conference runners-up Cape Henlopen Vikings. The meet starts at 3:30 PM.
Girl’s Meet Wrap-Up - Sussex Central: 79, Lake Forest: 99
The SCHS Lady Knights lost a tightly contested meet against the Lady Spartans of Lake Forest on Friday afternoon by a final score of 89 - 79. SCHS would win the 200 meter medley relay with the team of Maddie McTeer, Maggie Walker, Carolyn Munoz and Steph Wilson winning in a time of 2:24.01. Lake would jump out to an 8 point lead by placing first through third in the 200 meter freestyle, with SC junior Emma Brewington and freshman Aubrey Johnson grabbing 4th and 5th place points. Junior Carolyn Munoz and senior co-captain Steph Wilson would bring the Knights back within 6 points of Lake by placing 1st (2:51.54) and 3rd (3:11.32) in the 200 meter individual medley.
In the 50 free, Maddie McTeer would touch the wall first to win in a season best time of :28.88 seconds. Teammates Brewington and Lilly Taylor would place 5th and 6th in the event. Munoz and Wilson would represent the Lady Knights next in the 100 meter butterfly and again place first and third in the event and bring the Lady Knights back within 6 points of the Lady Spartans. SC would get an unexpected 6 point boost from Johnson, who won the 100 meter freestyle in a personal best time of 1:23.49. Her teammates Emma Walker and senior co-captain Megan Smith would place 3rd and 4th, tying up the score with the Lady Spartans and Lady Knights having 47 points a piece.
The 400 meter freestyle was up next, and McTeer would place first and notch her third DIAA state qualifying time of the early season as she touched the wall in 5:14.60. Sophomore teammate Jane Warren would place 4th in 6:33.82. Lake's 2nd and 3rd place points would end up bringing the score to a 55 - 55 stalemate. Next up was the 200 meter freestyle relay, and the team of Brewington, freshman Emma Walker, Smith and Johnson would place 2nd in 2:29.14. Lake's 1st & 3rd place in the event gave them a 6 point lead they would not relenquish the rest of the afternoon. In the next event, the100 meter backstroke, Brewington and Smith would place 2nd and 3rd in 1:49.39 and 1:50.00, respectively. M. Walker, Warren and Taylor would compete for the Lady Knights in the 100 meter breaststroke and place in 3rd, 4th and 6th for SCHS.
The 400 meter freestyle relay was the final event of the meet, and saw the Lady Knights emerge victorious, with the foursome of Munoz, M. Walker, Wilson and McTeer place first in a time of 4:29.67. Despite earning 8 points with the 1st place finish, the Lady Knights would end up 10 points short of the Lady Spartans.
Sussex Central is back in action against Cape Henlopen this Thursday, 12/19. The meet is at Sussex Academy and the first event hits the water at 3:30.
