Wando's Lierley and Morrin named Lowcountry's top swimmers

In a high school swim season where championships were won and lost by hundredths of a second, the competition for All-Lowcountry swimmers of the year honors was equally as tight.

In the end, a pair of Wando senior athletes out-touched other leading candidates as the Warriors' Jonathan Lierley is the male swimmer of the year and teammate Danielle Morrin is the top female swimmer.

Jonathan Lierley and Danielle Morrin, both seniors at Wando High School, are the All-Lowcountry swimmers of the year.

Lierley, the top area performer in the 100-yard butterfly and 100 freestyle, was the Class AAAA champion in both events. Making a strong case for top male honor was Lierley's younger brother, Zach, a Wando sophomore, who was the top area swimmer in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, events in which he won state championships.

The older Lierley said it's good to have someone in the family to train and commiserate with.

"If I beat him, I give him a little crap," Jonathan Lierley said. "If he beats me, he doesn't say too much. That's the way he is.

"It's awesome to have a brother who also swims. After practice, we can talk. We can relate."

Lierley has signed to swim at the Universty of Pittsburgh, where he plans to major in business and has a dream to compete in the 2012 Olympics.

"I'm a half-second off from a qualifying time in the 100 butterfly and a second off in the 200 fly. It's going to take time, commitment and a lot of practice, but it would be a great accomplishment."

Joining the Lierleys on the All-Lowcountry boys first team are Academic Magnet junior Winslow DiBona (200 freestyle), First Baptist senior Matthew Hughes (50 freestyle), Wando freshman Travis Morrin (500 freestyle), and Ashley Ridge senior Elijah Bohon (100 backstroke).

Danielle Morrin, who swam the area's fastest time in the 200 individual medley (and third fastest in the state) was one-hundredth of a second away from having the area's top 100 breaststroke time.

"High school swimming was really fun," Morrin said. "I am going to miss it. I think it really helped me grow up."

Morrin will attend East Carolina where she plans to continue swimming.

"I fit in well with the team," Morrin said. "I like the way they train, the atmosphere and the coaches are awesome."

Two area swimmers who challenged Morrin for top female honors were West Ashley junior Chelsea Roberts and Ashley Ridge freshman Micah Bohon. Roberts and Bohon both recorded top area times in two events each. Roberts was the fastest in the 50 freestyle and 50 butterfly. Bohon had the best times in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Other All-Lowcountry girls' first team selections are James Island eighth-grader Hannah Craig (200 free), James Island sophomore Caty Hueske (500 free), and Bishop England junior Hanna Humphreys (100 breaststroke).
