Coaches and Directors
Josh Stroble was born in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. He began swimming at a young age and competed all the way through high school and college. He attended the College of Charleston and graduated with a degree in Business Communications.
Coach Rob swam for CCST (City of Charleston Swim Team) from 1994-2000, and swam for SMRT (Summerville Marlins Racing Team) from 2000-2003. He has coached Parkshore, Pine Forest, and James Island summer league teams. He has also run a "Swim America Program" for two Summers. He graduated from East Carolina University with a B.S. in Health and Fitness Specialty, has an ACSM (Am. College of Sports Medicine) personal training certification and was a personal trainer from 2005-2007. Coach Rob has been coaching with SMRT since 2007, Assistant head coach since end of 2024. He is an ASCA level 2 Coach.
Coach Shelbi has grown up in the West Ashley area since moving here in high school. She is a graduate of the College of Charleston with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught for nine years in the Charleston County School system. For almost the last two decades, she has been teaching in a homeschool community. She homeschooled all three of her children, spending lots of time on the soccer field and the pool deck. Her love for the water inspired her to teach her own kids to swim at a very early age. That quickly turned into her giving lessons to friends and neighborhood kids. When her kids were old enough, they joined the neighborhood swim team. After two years of being just a swim mom, she took a position as an assistant coach on the summer team. Her sons began swimming for SMRT in 2014. After a couple of years, she joined SMRT coaching the Minnows group. In her free time, she loves going to the beach and vacationing with her family.
Coach Kristen has been involved with swimming for most of her life. She swam competitively throughout her school years including competing for the University of Connecticut at the Division 1 level. At UCONN she competed in the sprint category with the 50 FR and 100 BK as her dominant events. UCONN was ECAC Champions her senior year and she competed at Big East Championships all four years of her collegiate career. Prior to moving to SC in 2018, Coach Kristen was the Head Coach for the Junior Group at the Cape Cod Swim Club in Bourne, MA from 2010-2018. During her tenure at CCSC, she coached elite level athletes at meets throughout the United States and Canada including Speedo Futures in Baltimore, MD and Sectionals in Buffalo, NY.
Coach Ross swam for SMRT from 2013-2019. Despite a late introduction to swimming at the age of 11, Coach Ross grew up in a swimming family in Charleston, where his late-father Kelly, swam for multiple teams in Charleston in the 70s and early 80s. Ross developed a pretty wide swimming background, whether it's swimming or coaching for his summer league team, James Island Stingrays since 2012, or competing for his high school, James Island Trojans from 2014-2018. With a specialty in 100 and 200 Breaststroke, Ross qualified for his first SC State Championship at 14 in 2016 then later that year qualified for SCHSL 5A State in 100 Breaststroke. He would go on to qualify for State another 3 times in SC and finish his swimming career in July 2019. Coach Ross has coached for SMRT since August 2021, loves being able to coach not just with former teammates and friends, but also having the opportunity to work alongside coaches that coached him. Most importantly, he prides himself on giving back to the program that made him who he is today.
Outside the pool, Coach Ross enjoys traveling to race tracks, whether it's NASCAR or your local short track, and his Oklahoma Sooners.
Coach Gray grew up in Charleston. He loved the water from an early age. He began swimming summer swim team at age 6. At age 10, he began swimming competitively with SMRT. He swam with both SMRT and West Ashley High School until he graduated in 2022. His favorite strokes were freestyle and backstroke. His favorite events were all the long distances, as well as backstroke events. He also enjoyed doing open water events in SC, NC, and FL. After graduating, he began coaching with SMRT, working with the Minnows group and now coaches the Silver group. He also has been coaching his summer team since high school. He is currently enrolled in the Radiologic Technology program with an Associates in Applied Science at Trident Technical College. In his free time, he enjoys paddle boarding, playing pickleball and volleyball, and traveling.
Coach “Dru” started swimming at 3yrs old with the YMCA of Durham, North Carolina, and eventually joined his two older brothers at New Wave Swimming Team and swam in summer with Parkwood swimming club. He is a dedicated and accomplished swimmer known for his relentless work ethic and versatility in the pool. In 2000, he moved to Charleston where he continued his swimming journey with local swim teams CCST, Man of War , MPSC , SMRT, and Park shore. In his Freshman year, he joined West Ashley high school's swimming team making State his freshman year. He specialized in freestyle and butterfly events, and contributed to his team's success in relay events. Coach Dru consistently demonstrated exceptional speed, endurance, and technique, earning recognition at both local and national competitions. Dru continues to pursue his goals with unwavering focus, aiming to leave a lasting legacy in the world of competitive swimming.
