Sun Coast Swim Team Hosts 'May at the Races' Developmental Swim Meet, Celebrates New Collegiate Swimmers

On Friday afternoon, the Sun Coast Swim Team (SCST) hosted over 30 swimmers and over a 60 spectators at the ‘May at the Races’ developmental swim meet at their home Bicentennial Pool in Bicentennial Park, Crystal River. This structured practice meet allowed swimmers to practice for USA-sanctioned competition in a more informal environment, complete with touchpads and race conditions. For many new swimmers, this was their first meet, providing a valuable introduction to competitive swimming. Meanwhile, veteran swimmers took the opportunity to showcase their talents and prepare for the upcoming summer season.

The event also served as a reunion of sorts, bringing back former SCST collegiate swimmers Meghan Cimini from Saginaw Valley State University, Genevieve Kennedy from Florida Southern College, and Marshall Wilson from Bentley University. These alumni returned to cheer on their old team and celebrate the newest SCST collegiate swimmers: Justin Rieck, who will be swimming for Barry University, and Daniel “Danny” Pontrelli II, who will be swimming for St. Thomas University.

The meet saw the return of former head coach, now backup coach, Mr. Chuck Gatton, along with Mrs. Gayle Gatton, both of whom came to support the team. Their presence was a reminder of the lasting bonds formed within the SCST community.

A special mention goes to "Starter Mike," Mike Laycock, a dedicated swim dad and equipment expert, whose contributions were crucial to the smooth running of the meet. Timing and scoring experts Nikki Rieck and Lori Lenior, both SCST Board of Directors members, ensured the meet's technical aspects were flawlessly executed. Additionally, Leigh Anne Silva provided delicious cupcakes that added a sweet touch to the event, while numerous families donated food and money towards gifts for Justin and Danny, highlighting the supportive nature of the SCST community.

The meet was a collaborative effort, with many volunteers stepping up to time races, photograph the event, and offer their support in various ways. These home swim meets are invaluable, providing swimmers with a platform to develop their skills, build confidence, and foster a sense of community.

The success of this meet would not have been possible without the collective effort of the SCST family. From coaches and board members to parents and alumni, everyone played a part in creating a positive and encouraging environment for the swimmers. This spirit of camaraderie and support is what makes the Sun Coast Swim Team special, and it is what will continue to drive the team to greater heights in the future.
