SCST Shines at Riptide Aquatics Summer Open with Impressive Team and Individual Performances
The Sun Coast Swim Team (SCST) showcased their dedication and talent at the Riptide Aquatics Summer Open held on June 22-23, 2024, at the Ed Gandy Pool Complex in Lakeland, Florida. Competing at this meet for nearly two decades, SCST continued their tradition of excellence, securing second place overall despite bringing a smaller contingent of swimmers this year.
The team's impressive performance was highlighted by three swimmers who earned the prestigious High Point Award for their respective age and gender groups. Cullen Alford, 12, Halle Filipic, 10, and Chase Alford, 10, stood out with their exceptional swims, underscoring the depth of talent within SCST.
The team collectively earned 671 points, with the ladies contributing 309 points and the gentlemen adding 320 points. These scores were bolstered by numerous top-three finishes and many personal best times, reflecting the hard work and dedication of both the swimmers and their coaches.
Cullen Alford's and Halle Filipic’s performances were particularly noteworthy as they both achieved Florida Age Group (FLAG) championship cuts. Cullen made his cut in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:09.64, securing first place in the event. Similarly, Halle made a FLAG cut time in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing in first place with a time of 1:12.03, an impressive improvement of -3.04 seconds from her personal best. These accomplishments qualify both Cullen and Halle to join their teammate Chase at the 2024 Summer FLAG Championships in July, promising more exciting swims and opportunities for success.
The success at the Riptide Aquatics Summer Open is a testament to the commitment and excellence of the SCST coaching team. Their relentless efforts to foster a supportive and competitive environment have enabled their swimmers to achieve remarkable feats and personal growth.
With their sights now set on the summer-ending meets, including the Florida Senior Championships, Florida Age Group Championships, and the Florida Area 3 Championships, the Sun Coast Swim Team is poised for more outstanding performances. The dedication and spirit of the SCST swimmers and coaches continue to inspire and uplift the community, exemplifying the values of hard work, perseverance, and sportsmanship.
