NAC Master's Profile: Larry Lovelace

When did you join  NAC   Masters  and how often do you swim?

I swim 3-5 days a week.  I officially joined NAC Masters about a year ago.

What is your background as a swimmer and athlete?

I started swimming at age 9 in the summer league because they need a 4th for the relay.  I did not start swimming year round until I was about 14 (1968).  Because I started late, I had to make up for lost time.  I can remember counting the times that I would get lapped at practice….which was no fun!  Our club was called Westside then Westside-Victory then NAC.   Thankfully I got better and placed 2ndin the High School State Meet as a Junior and Senior in the 100 fly.  I was fortunate to earn a scholarship to Florida State University and was a 3 year letterman. I made it to FSU before Bobby Bowden and he is already retired from his sport.  I have always swam for exercise and would swim when my sons were at practice when I drove the carpool.  Every 5 years when I was at the bottom of my age group I’d get in shape and do Masters Nationals or Worlds. I think my best was about 45 when I placed 5th in the 100 fly at Worlds in Montréal. No meets now just exercise…I hate to run!

What motivates you to wake up and swim at 6am?

When I was in college my coach said that we were in the best shape of our lives and it would take very little for us to stay in shape and not get too flabby.  I took that advice 35 years ago.

Outside of the pool, who are you?

I have been a banker for 35 years and serve as the regional executive  for GreenBank/Capital Bank in Middle TN.  I’ve been married to Becky for 25 years.  We have sons Curtis who is captain of the Stanford Swim Team and Chase who as a freshman is majoring in Fraternity and Accounting at Alabama.

Some people might be surprised to know that...

I have really mellowed out.

Favorite Brian Allen-ism:

Brian is a great guy and we are thankful that he likes to get up and deal with a bunch of old grouchy swimmers in the morning.  I love hearing about his stories from the bar and about some swimmers that don’t know what they are doing…….I’d listen to anything at 6am instead of getting in that cold water.
