Hey Sailfish Families!

Weekly Updates:

The STX championship was an outstanding meet, and it provides us with several teaching moments. So this is a longer than usual writing.

We had several swimmers lock into the fact that it is all about mindset and swimmers stepped up over and over again. Swimming as many events as you can is by far the best way to stay focused. I have observed over many decades of coaching that the more you do the more you do. The kids that swim multiple events tend to have the most time drops and the best swims even on the third day when they are supposed to be the most tired. Going to swim meets and getting times in every single event early in the season is the part of the team process and should be a goal of every swimmer going forward.

There were a few mess ups that need to be addressed.

We have a long tradition of Sailfish parent timers not only doing what we are obligated to do but covering for other teams as well. This meet was an exception where I had to take my time away from the kids and go look for parents to fill the timing assignments. If you have not done so yet, at the next opportunity, step up and invest in your kids so I can stay focused on their swimming. We also had some lessons with our 9-10 boys for running around out in the field instead of staying focused on their swimming. The burning extra energy cost them at finals and at the first event, next morning. Hopefully, they have all learned a lesson to save their energy for the races. Besides parents not signing up to time, we only had two swimmers with priorities elsewhere, two false starts, one illness, and one scratch from finals! For a championship meet with 47 swimmers entered, that is almost a good meet.

The list of wins is quit long. We want to recognize Sham, Ben, and Eleanna for making the team a priority coming to the meet to swim a relay only allowing three other swimmers and three relays to be able to swim and score points for the team. Thank you guys.

We had folks rearranging attending church, band practice schedules and doing everything they could to be there for the team. That is the correct attitude for a championship meet.

There were a lot of good swims in all ages in prelims and super swims in finals. For our team over 90% of the swims at finals are improvements over the swim in the morning. Several swimmers had big breakthroughs. A couple of examples. Congratulations to Piper for never giving up over the last year and breaking through to make an A cut in prelims and then coming back in finals and making an additional A cut. Congratulations Olivia for sprinting from the flags to the wall to come from behind and win a gold medal by .01 of a second, proving that what we practice actually works in a meet.

For the overall team results we placed 4th out of 14 teams, just 15 points behind 3rd. 6 bonus swims were converted to BB cuts. There were 132 personal best swims, 22 A cuts leading to a lot of STAGS A meet entry updates!
