Mississippi Swimming Hosts First DEI Clinic

Flowood, MS | November 18, 2023: Mississippi Swimming Inc. (MSI) held the first ever DEI Camp for swimmers in our LSC. 24 athletes representing different programs gathered for a one-day event. These athletes came together with a common goal of fostering and empowering a culture of inclusion with the mindset that performance excellence can happen in any program, by any athlete, from any background.

Camp directors Will and Isaac Davis brought some big energy to the camp. They were able to connect and relate to the campers while sharing technique tips they acquired while swimming for the Florida Gators. Isaac and Will have experience helping with the Gators swim camps in the summer and it was good to see them put their skillset to use here in Mississippi. The campers spent the morning sessions in small groups, one group covering dives/turns/finishes with Isaac and the other group freestyle and backstroke technique with Will. At the conclusion of the morning session athletes fellowshipped together for a sit-down hibachi chef performance and meal. During this time Will and Issac were able to share some insight on their NCAA journey, giving advice on how to deal with adversity, disappointment, and distractions to achieve your goal. It was back to the pool for an afternoon session in groups covering relay exchanges, butterfly and breaststroke technique. The camp ended with some fun as Will and Isaac joined everyone for some exciting relays.

MSI hopes the attendees will take these resources and experience back to their clubs to create an environment that builds capacity within the swimming community to understand, accept, value, and honor the unique contributions of all people.
