TSM's Eugene Tee Snags Three Medals at Commonwealth Youth Games
Eugene Tee earned the honor of representing Australia at the 2011
Commonwealth Youth Games on the Isle of Man, where he collected three
medals (2 Silver, 1 Bronze) in three days.
On day one, Eugene carved more than 6 seconds off of his previous best time in
the 400scm IM with an exciting come-from-behind effort to finish at the hip of the
winner, British record holder Matthew Johnson. The time of 4:15.84 (-6.02) all
but guarantees Mr. Tee a spot in the WORLD's 2011 top 50. Eugene also took
7th place in the 200 Back that same day, completing a difficult double.
Day two saw Eugene qualify 2nd in the 200 Breast, with a personal best time of
2:20.56 (-1.98). However, he would go on to scratch the Breaststroke event to
focus his effort and energy on the grueling 1500 Free. The strategy appeared to
pay off when Eugene claimed Bronze in the 1500 with a time of 15:21.90 (-2.18).
On the third and final day of competition, Eugene wore his second Silver medal
of the weekend, after a solid performance of 2:01.92 (-2.11) in the 200 IM. He
also placed 8th in the 400 Free, cracking the 4 minute barrier to go 3:59.18p.
Finally, Eugene contributed to the Australians' 5th place finish in the 800 Free
Relay, completing the third leg in a swift 1:54.27. The Australian team of Te
Haumi Maxwell, Robert Gerlach, Tee and Jarrod Poort combined to cover the
distance in 7:33.50.
Overall, it was an outstanding race weekend for Eugene and an international
experience he will not soon forget. Congratulations, Euge!
