TSM at CCS JOs
TSM will not be attending the 2013 Pacific Committee Championship Meet Feb 22-24.
Important, please read in entirety.
Challenge
The Pacific Committee Championship (Pac-Com) meet has had a terrible history of being oversubscribed by swimmers lending to preliminary sessions running well into the afternoon and finals sessions running late into the night. This year’s experimental format that SoCal Swimming has adopted for JOs (JO & Super JO) and Pacific Committee Champs (Super JO Max with Prelims/Finals) has opened the Pac-Com meet up to even more swimmers than before.
With the continuation of the Prelims/Finals championship meet format and the Super JO “Max” times, the Pacific Committee has opened the meet up to all 14 and under JO qualifiers as well as all the 15 and Over swimmers who were not offered a JO meet this year and have not qualified for the “Super JO” meet.
This year’s experimental format that So Cal Swimming has adopted for JOs (JO & Super JO) with the “Super JO” cuts being at the sectional level and JOs being a 14 and Under meet, it seems that those 15 and Over athletes not ready for a senior meet option have been overlooked by SoCal Swimming.
With that said, we wanted a meet that would be a solid alternative to the Pacific Committee Champs. It would have to be well run, relaxed but competitive and allow for those with faster times to race their main events. This meet would also have to accommodate our team’s need for a meet that would allow our 15 and Over athletes who are not yet ready for a senior meet to have a final short course competition this season.
Solution
There was discussion among coaches of an alternative to the Pac-Com meet on deck at JOs last weekend. That discussion was fueled by a common question, "Where can we take our swimmers for a final short course meet given the less than ideal options presented by the SoCal schedule?"
We have found the Central California Swimming (CCS) Short Course Junior Olympics meet on Feb. 15-18 to be an adequate substitution that would not only replace the Pacific Committee Championships but also help fulfill other requirements that were simply, not available locally. This meet, at 1 hour and 45 minutes away hosted at the Bakersfield Community College, will be at a great pool and offers better opportunities to TSM swimmers with no “Max” and accessible entry times.
We do not believe that Pac-Com Champs is a viable meet from an administrative, coaching or athlete standpoint. And even more daunting is the potential 14 to 16 hours on deck each day.
We are happy with the format and the quality of the meet facilities at the CCS JO Meet. It better serves those 15 and up swimmers who were left out of JOs last week. Additionally, nearly 100 TSM Swimmers have individual qualifying times for this Junior Olympic meet making it a great team opportunity.
We understand if families have made other plans for that weekend but encourage you to take a look at this meet if it fits your family schedule. We must hear back from you rather quickly as we do not want to miss this opportunity for those who can attend. We will need to have a registration commitment answer by January 31st
Thank you for your support and consideration of better opportunities for our swimmers. See you on Deck.
Regards,
TSM Coaching Staff
