Thiago Pereira won his fifth gold medal in the Guadalajara Pan American Games after winning the Men's 200m Backstroke race with a time of 1’57’’.19/100, a new Pan American record. Also, with this gold medal, Pereira becomes the Brazilian athlete with the most gold medals won in Pan American Games with 11 total, breaking the tie he had with Hugo Hoyama, a Table Tennis player.

Pereira had a comfortable race after he started leading from the beginning. He defeated Colombia's Andres Pinzon who took the silver with a time of 1’58’31/100 and Ryan Murphy won the bronze with 1’58’’.50/100.

Besides five gold medals, Pereira also won a silver and a bronze medal in Guadalajara 2011.

The fourth place was for Rexford Tullius from the United States with a time of 1’59”.23/100, followed by Brazil's Leonardo De Deus with 2’03”.28/100 and Venezuela's Luis Rojas with a time of 2’06”.07/100.

Mexico's Ezequiel Trujillo finished seventh with a time of 2’06”.18/100 while Cuba's Pedro Luis Mendel finished with 2’13”.77/100.
