Brazil finishes atop medals at 2012 South American Championships

BELEM, BRAZIL--Brazil finished atop the swimming standings at the 2012
South American Championships in Belém, winning 26 of 40 events in the
pool. The Swimming competition was held March 14-17. Swimming medal
standings from last week are:
  1. Brazil (51 total) -- 26 gold, 19 silver, 6 bronze
  2. Colombia (16) -- 5 g, 2 s, 9 b
  3. Argentina (26) -- 4 g, 9 s, 13 b
  4. Venezuela (22) -- 4 g, 9 s, 9 b
  5. Paraguay (3) -- 1 g, 1 s, 1 b
  6. Ecuador (2) -- 1 silver, 1 bronze
  7. Peru (1) -- 1 bronze

Other countries with swimmers at the championships were: Bolivia, Chile,
Panama, Suriname and Uruguay.

In the Open Water portion of the Championships, both the 5K and 10K
races were won by the same individuals: Brazil's Ana Marcela Cunha
(44:02:56 and 1:47:24:62) and Equator's Ivan Enderica (39:33:65 and
