FINA has issued a 6-month suspension to Venezuela's Men's Water Polo Team

Reports indicated that FINA has issued a 6-month suspension to Venezuela's men's Water Polo team

VENEZUELA--A report from Venezuela indicates that FINA has issued a 6-month suspension to Venezuela's men's Water Polo team for their failure to show-up at last week's Olympic qualifying tournament in Canada. The suspension covers just the water polo team, and none of the other disciplines of the Venezuelan Aquatic Sports Federation, Federación Venezolana de Deportes Acuático (FEVEDA). FEVEDA reportedly also will be fined. Venezuela had qualified for play in the tournament with their win in the 2010 Central American & Caribbean Games; however, the team failed to travel to Canada, due to logistical problems with their flights (planes for the flight the team was on out of Venezuela did not show up, twice; and a re-routed attempt flight through the USA failed when the team was unable to obtain visa to travel through the country). All of this happened in the few days before the tournament, which prevented the tournament organizers from being able to notify a stand-by team that they could take Venezuela's place in the tournament. FINA has not yet posted an announcement of the sanction.
