Canada & Brazil in hunt for one of four spots for London 2012 Women's Water Polo field
Trieste, Italy will stage the Women's Olympic Games Water Polo Qualification Tournament from April 15-22, the last opportunity for the four best-classified teams to compete at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Trieste, Italy will stage the Women's Olympic Games Water Polo Qualification Tournament from April 15-22, the last opportunity for the four best-classified teams to compete at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The participating teams are divided in two groups, as follows:
Group A: Italy, Russia, Hungary, Spain
Group B: Greece, Brazil, Canada, Kazakhstan, Netherlands
Group B: Greece, Brazil, Canada, Kazakhstan, Netherlands
World champion Greece and bronze-medallist Russia come as heavy favourites in Trieste and might well face pressure from closest challengers Italy, the Netherlands, Canada and Hungary, all in the world's top-10.
The teams already going to London are continental qualifiers Great Britain (as host, for Europe), Australia (for Oceania), the United States (for Americas) and China (for Asia).
The draw for the Olympic Games Water Polo Tournament will be held on May 5, 2012 in London (GBR).
There will be a qualified team vacancy due to the non-participation of a Women’s or Men’s Water Polo team from the African Continent at the Olympic Games in London 2012.
In consequence, and according to FINA Rules (BL 9.3.10.1.3 & 9.3.10.3.4), the first four Women's and Men's teams from the Olympic Games Qualification Tournament will qualify for the Olympic Games.
The Draws for the Men's and Women’s Water Polo Olympic Games Qualification Tournaments 2012 were conducted by Dr. Julio C. Maglione (FINA President), Mr. D. Diathesopoulos (TWPC Bureau Liaison), Mr. C. Marculescu (FINA Executive Director) and Mr. G. Lonzi (TWPC Chairman) in London (GBR) on February 19, 2012.
