Day 1 summary from the XVIIth U.A.N.A. Pan American Junior Men's Championships

Game #5 VEN 15 TRI 12

Venezuela, after a strong start, had to work real hard to maintain the lead and beat a pesky Trinidad and Tobago team that never stopped playing. The first quarter ended with a comfortable lead for Venezuela 5-0. For the next three quarters Trinidad and Tobago started reducing the lead.

Venezuela trio of Velazquez, Moreno and Rojas was too much for Trinidad. All three players had three goals, and most of them came when Trinidad was closing in on the score. Venezuela plays Argentina and Trinidad has the day off.

Game #6 MEX 17 PER 7

Mexico used a powerful counter attack strategy during the second quarter, opening what was a close game until then. Peru was ahead 4-3 with 6:17 left in the second quarter, when Mexico went into high gear and scored six goals in a four minute span to open the score.

Peru wasn’t able to put a consistent attack, while the Mexicans kept pressure on the ball and quick attacks in offense. Peru has a very young team, preparing them for future international competitions. Tomorrow Mexico will play USA and Peru will battle Puerto Rico.

Game #7 USA 13 COL 3

A strong United States team came as one oh the favorites to win the event, and showed their overall versatility against Colombia.  After a close first half of the game, USA broke the game wide open by scoring six goals in the decisive third quarter.

USA used their quickness in the counter and their depth to score at ease. USA’s opponent for tomorrow will be Mexico, while Colombia will have a bye.

Game #4 ARG 6 CAN 19

Canada blew open what appeared to be a close game after the first quarter. With the score tied 1-1, Canada went on a 7-0 spree in less than eight minutes. The counter attacks, the extra man and tenacious defense seemed to be too overwhelming for an undersized team from Argentina

Nikola Mitrovic (#9) scored six goals in the game, just as many as the whole Argentinian team. David Lapins helped him with three goals. For tomorrow’s games, Argentina will play Venezuela and, in a great duel, Canada will play Brazil, which had a bye for the day.
