Brazilian Ana Marcela Cunha is leading FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup 2012
Some of the world's best marathon swimmers will take the plunge at Hong Kong's Repulse Bay this Sunday (October 7) for the seventh leg of the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup 2012.
Brazilian Ana Marcela Cunha comfortably leads the women's overall rankings with a total 100 points. Taking part in all races, she missed the podium only once and was victorious in Eilat (ISR) and Cancun (MEX). Currently second is Germany's Nadine Reichert (60 points, 2011 silver-medallist) with one podium appearance in Viedma (ARG) where she took bronze. American Eva Fabian (56 points) stands in third position, having won two races (Viedma and Lac St-Jean) and claiming the minor medal at the last stop in Lac Megantic, Canada.
In the men's field, 10km reigning World champion Spyridon Gianniotis from Greece won the first three legs and a silver medal in Cancun, thus sitting atop the general standings with 78 points. Rising ever-higher in the ranks throughout the season (third in Lac St-Jean and second in Lac Megantic), 2011 silver medallist Christian Reichert from Germany is second with 74 points. Russia's Evgeny Drattsev, owner of one gold and two bronze so far, places third with 56 points.
With two races to go (Hong Kong on October 6 and Shantou on October 13), competition will be fierce among the closest challengers to reach the highest podium.
