Trinidad's George Bovell is top male racer at Stockholm World Cup
Trinidad's George Bovel wins 100IM in 51.56, top male scorer in Stockholm World Cup
The FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup 2012 is underway and as Hungary's latest swimming sensation Katinka Hosszu is on track for more medals, all eyes are on the next stop, Moscow, starting October 17.
The 23-year-old, who is taking part in the World Cup for the first time, left a strong impression in Stockholm, Sweden, where she captured eight more medals (6 of them gold), bringing her overall tally to 24. The only disappointment: she missed the gold in the 200m butterfly, losing to compatriot Zsuzsanna Jakabos (2:06.90). Hosszu also scored the women's best performance of the meet in the 400m IM, clocking a blistering 4:28.01 (923 points).
Local star Therese Alshammar, four-time World Cup winner (in 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2011), continued her reign in the 50m and 100m butterfly. Other "sprinters" producing golden performances in Stockholm were Germany's Britta Steffen (50m and 100m freestyle), Australian Rachel Goh (50m and 100m backstroke) and young Olympic champion Ruta Meilutyte from Lithuania (50m and 100m breaststroke).
Among men, George Bovell's (TRI) pulsating swim in the 100 IM (51.56) received the top score of the meet, 954 points. The talented Caribbean also won the 50m freestyle in 20.82. The Australian squad was also in good shape, pocketing five gold: 100m freestyle (Tommaso D’Orsogna, 47.05), 400m freestyle and 100m backstroke (Robert Hurley, 3:43.75 and 50.38), 50m butterfly (Matthew Targett, 22.51) and 100m butterfly (Kenneth To, 50.19).
In the mixed relays, Finland earned top spot in the 4x50m freestyle (1:32.75) while the Norwegian team touched first in the 4x50m medley (1:41.83).
Kenneth To is the current leader of the men's general rankings (70 points), followed by Japan's Daiya Seto (52 points) and George Bovell (51 points). In the women's field, Hosszu also leads with 70 points, while Ukraine's Daryna Zevina and Therese Alshammar place 2-3, respectively with 45 and 36 points.
Don't miss the action in Moscow! The competition will be streamed live and free of charge on FINAtv and is also available on iPhone/iPad (LIVE+ application @appstore).
