Swimming Canada welcomes new board members

WINNIPEG – The membership of Swimming Canada elected its board of directors for the 2012-13 season at the organization’s annual general meeting in Winnipeg this past weekend.
Cheryl Gibson and Kerry Mummery of Edmonton were welcomed as new members, while Jim Shaw of King City, Ont., and Vice-President Sean Finn of Montreal were re-elected at the AGM.
They join incumbent directors Leslie Cliff of Vancouver, John Hinds of Toronto and President David de Vlieger of Calgary.
Cheryl Gibson is a Chartered Accountant and lawyer. She is a partner in the Edmonton office of Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP. Cheryl’s standing as a leading Canadian expert in the field of tax law has been recognized by the publication Best Lawyers in Canada. Earlier this year, she was appointed Queen’s Counsel (Alberta).
Before becoming a success in the professional arena, Gibson enjoyed athletic success at the highest levels of international swimming. She was a member of the national swim team from 1974 to 1982 and won a silver medal in women’s 400m individual medley at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. Gibson was also a medalist at world championships, Commonwealth Games and Pan American Games, and her many accolades include induction to the Canadian Olympic Sport Hall of Fame. She previously served on Swimming Canada’s board of directors from 1983 to 1994.

Kerry Mummery is Dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta. He previously spent more than 13 years in Australia, most recently as Executive Dean and Pro-Vice Chancellor at Central Queensland University and president-elect for Sports Medicine Australia, the country’s peak professional body for sport medicine and sport science.
Mummery also boasts an extensive background in and around the pool. After completing his career as an interuniversity swimmer at the University of Manitoba in the early 1970’s, he was head coach at the Saskatoon Goldfin Swim Club, Oakville (Ont.) Aquatic Club, Brandon (Man.) Thunderbird Swim Club and the Leduc (Alta.) Otters Swim Club. Mummery has also served as head coach for the Saskatchewan Canada Games team, chair of the Saskatchewan Swim Coaches Association and was twice named to the Canadian National Youth Swimming Team coaching staffs in the 1980s. While in Australia he was president of the CQ Aquajet swim club while his children participated at the state and national levels of competitive swimming.
