Saint Lucia Amateur Swimming Association Hosts successful “Start-Up” Swim Meet
To kick of its calendar of activities for 2013, the Saint Lucia Amateur Swimming Association on
Saturday 2nd February hosted its third annual “Start-Up” Swim Meet. This was a developmental
swim meet with a difference, as the focus was firmly on the younger, developing swimmers, as
the meet was divided into two groups, 8 and under swimmers competing in the morning session
and 9 and over swimmers for the evening session

The meet saw one national Age Group record being broken by Ethan ‘Speedy” Dyke Elliott in
the boys 9-10 200m Free with a time of 2:37.00, removing 0.7 seconds from the previous mark

The parents were very much a part of the process, as many of them provided invaluable
assistance by acting as timers or taking on the roles of other officials. Swimmers from five of
the island’s swim clubs participated in the event, with a total of 160 swimmers representing the
Lightening Aquatics, Racers, Sea Jays, Sharks and Southern Flying Fish.

Many of the young athletes managed to record personal best times, despite having just returned
to training following the Christmas break, a testament to the hard work and hours of dedication
by the coaches and club administrators who work hard to ensure that the young athletes have
every opportunity to shine in the water.

The Association’s next developmental swim meet will be the “The Double A Challenge” Meet
on 2nd March, where the emphasis will be on the longer distance events.
