IOC Coordination Commission for the Rio 2016 Games visits the city for the fourth time

With the end of the London Games, from now on the Commission will come to Rio de Janeiro twice a year

 

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: 15th February 2013: On Monday the 18th, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission for the Rio 2016™ Games starts its fourth official visit to the city. Among the activities included in the three-day agenda are meetings with the Games organisers, as well as visits to venues and infrastructure construction sites.

With the aim of helping each Games edition Organising Committee in its work and monitoring the projects’ development, the IOC forms Coordination Commissions, which visit the host cities periodically.

The commission visits the host city once a year until the end of the previous Games edition, and twice a year after that. The group assigned for the Rio 2016™ Games was formed in January 2010. It has 18 members, and has already been on three official visits to Rio de Janeiro.

Since the last visit in June 2012, the Rio 2016™ Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Rio 2016™) has made progress in important areas of the project:

  • • Olympic Park – Construction started in June with the International Autodrome’s demolition, which was concluded in January.
  • • Deodoro X Park – The bid terms for the selection of the Urban Master Plan and the Basic and Executive Projects were launched.
  • • London 2012 Debriefing – More than 500 people took part in the event in Rio in order to discuss the main learning points from London 2012.
  • • Flag Handover – Rio 2016™ organised memorable ceremonies to receive the Olympic and Paralympic flags during the London closing ceremonies.
  • • Port renovation – Construction of the tunnels has began, which will allow the Perimetral Viaduct’s demolition.
  • • Increase in the number of available rooms in the city – 48 new hotels are confirmed to start operations by 2016.
  • • Pre-Games Training Guide – Launched during the London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

 

International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission for the Rio 2016™ Games

The Coordination Commission includes members from the five continents, all with previous experience in Olympic Games Evaluation, Coordination Commissions or Organising Committees of the world’s largest sport event. The group represents several units of the Olympic Movement, such as athletes, National Olympic Committees and International Federations, for the coordination required to guarantee a successful event.

After becoming the first African to receive the Olympic gold medal after winning the 400 meter hurdle event in 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, El Moutawakel became the first African to lead an IOC Coordination Commission.
