François Imbeau-Dulac fifth at FINA Grand Prix Diving Circuit
ROSTOCK, Germany – Olympic team member François Imbeau-Dulac of St-Lazare, Que., picked up where he left off last season finishing fifth in the men’s three-metre springboard final to open the second stop on the FINA Grand Prix diving circuit.
Chinese divers were 1-2 with Chao He taking the gold with 498.90 points and Shixin Li the silver at 493.30. Illya Kvasha of Ukraine was third at 483.35.
Imbeau-Dulac, 22, ranked third overall in both the preliminaries and semifinals and produced 418.85 points, a similar score to what he achieved in the first two rounds.
‘’The finale was very high calibre,’’ said Imbeau-Dulac. ‘’I was consistent but I know I can do better. I was hesitant and lacked control.’’
Last year, Imbeau-Dulac enjoyed a breakthrough year highlighted by a victory at the Olympic trials which earned him a ticket to the London Games.
Maxim Bouchard of St-Constant, Que., was 18th in the prelims and did not advance.
On women’s 10-metre tower, it was another 1-2 China finish with Yajie Si and Jie Lian taking gold and silver. Julia Prokopchuk of Ukraine was third.
Carol-Anne Ware of Beloeil, Que., was battling the flu and was eliminated in the semifinals finishing fourth in her heat for eighth overall. After a promising second place in prelims, Ware scored lower on all her five dives in the semis.
‘’ I had a lot of energy in the prelims,’’ said Ware. ‘’But I felt weak as soon as the semis started. I almost passed out after my first dive. Still it was important for me to finish.’’
Competition continues through to Sunday.
