Canada's Benfeito gains ground on Chinese star at FINA Diving World Series
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal bettered her score by nearly 20 points on Saturday in a silver medal performance in the women’s 10-metre tower final to conclude the second stop on the FINA World Series circuit.
Olympic champion Ruolin Chen of China produced almost the exact same score as last week for the win with 403.85 points. Benfeito, 11th at the Olympics last year, followed at 381.90 and Yulia Koltunova of Russia was third at 371.05.
Last week in Beijing, Benfeito earned 362.25 for the silver as well.
“I’m very pleased,” said Benfeito, an Olympic bronze medallist with Roseline Filion on 10-metre synchro. “My entries are what improved the most and they still need to get better to catch the Chinese. My goal this season is to start scoring more than 400 points.”
Filion was also in the final and took sixth spot with 289.15 points.
The next stop on the circuit is April 19-21 in Edinburgh, Scotland, the host city of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
