Calgary Aquabelles win two team finals at Canadian Qualifier Championships
CALGARY – The Calgary Aquabelles won two team finals on Saturday at the Canadian Qualifier Championships synchronized swimming competition.
In the junior final, the Aquabelles totalled 76.796 points with a routine called Dark Elegance followed by Montreal Synchro at 75.741 and Toronto’s Granite Synchro in third at 75.686.
‘’We improved on our performance from the preliminaries and made the necessary corrections,’’ said Aquabelles coach Maude Pelchat. ‘’Our girls showed a lot of energy from start to finish and our acrobatic moves were successful.’’
In the 13-15 team final, the Aquabelles performing a super heroes themed number were first at 70.852, Montreal Synchro second at 70.124 and Variety Village Synchro Club from Toronto third at 69.352.
‘’We are really proud of our performance,’’ said Aquabelles team captain Breanne Bauer. ‘’The best part of our program were our highlights. They were difficult but we kept our calm and that gave us a lot of confidence.’’
In the 13-15 duet final, Andrée-Anne Côté and Laurence Levasseur of Synchro Élite in Quebec City took the gold with 71.478 points, Jasmine Baillargeon and Maude Jobin of Montreal Synchro second at 70.865 and Sabrina Barnes and Meaghan Ozikizler of Granite Synchro third at 70.708.
Montreal Synchro swept the medals in the senior free duet final with Genevieve Peel and Virginie Lévesque of Montreal Synchro earning gold with 79.950 points, Camille Bourgeois-Lessard and Carlie Cholette the silver at 78.240 and Kelly Hersh and Julie MacFarlane the bronze at 75.150.
Peel took the solo final at 79.270 with Cholette second at 79.000 and Gabrielle Boisvert of Synchro Élite third at 76.790.
The competition has attracted a record 455 synchronized swimmers from 38 clubs. Each province is represented. The junior and senior age groups are looking to qualify for the Canadian Open Championships, April 24-28 in Quebec City while the 13-15 age group, is vying for berths at the Canadian Espoir Championships May 29-June 2 in Ottawa.
Competition ends Sunday at Talisman Centre.
