Kali Wong leads junior solo at Canadian Open Championships

QUEBEC CITY – Kali Wong of the Calgary Aquabelles showed a vast improvement over last season on Wednesday posting the top score in the junior solo preliminaries to open the Canadian Open synchronized swimming championships being held in Quebec City.

Wong tabulated 80.383 points with Clare McGovern of Granite Synchro in Toronto second at 79.933 and Elizabeth Savard of Dollard Synchro in Montreal third at 79.084. The solo final is on Thursday.

Last year, the 16-year-old Wong was 13th after the prelims and placed 15th overall.

“This year I went for intensity and power in my routine,” said Wong, who started synchronized swimming at age seven. “I think the music change has also brought out the better synchronized swimmer in me.”

Wong was able to keep focused on the task at hand.

“I was able to block the crowd out and bring the judges in,” she said. “I was really happy with the performance.”

Competition continues through to Sunday.
