Caeli McKay win bronze at International Youth Diving Meet

DRESDEN, Germany – Caeli McKay of Calgary made an impressive international debut on Thursday earning the bronze medal in the women’s 14-15 age group one-metre springboard at the International Youth Diving Meet.

Lene Kruger led Germany to a 1-2 finish with 333.25 points with Christina Wassen second at 329.45.  McKay took the lead after the first round with high marks for her inward dive and remained in contention for top spot finishing at 326.25.

“It was a bit scary,” said McKay, a double national junior champion last year who turns 14 in June.  “This was my first international competition and one-metre isn’t my specialty.  But I gained more and more confidence after every dive.”

McKay, first after the preliminaries, will compete this weekend on three-metre.

In the men’s 16-18 three-metre, Tyler Roberge of Edmonton, a world junior team member in 2010, was fourth missing the podium by only 12 points.  Dylan Grisell of Etobicoke, Ont., was 20th.

There were two Canadian finalists in the women’s 16-18 10-metre with Courtney Hattie of Victoria seventh and Samantha Maiorino of St-Constant, Que., eighth.

Competition continues through to Sunday.
