Winnipeg’s Aimee Harrison wins semi heat at diving Grand Prix
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Aimee Harrison of Winnipeg set a personal best score and won her semifinal heat on women’s three-metre on Thursday to open the fifth stop on the FINA Grand Prix diving circuit.
Harrison, who made her international debut earlier this month at the Canada Cup Grand Prix, totalled 288 points. Emma Friesen of North Vancouver also advanced to the final placing second in the other semi. The top-three from each of the two semis advanced.
Harrison struggled in the preliminaries placing eighth out of nine divers.
“I’m surprised I came back that strong after prelims,” said Harrison, 18. “I just told myself I had to start again and forget about what just happened. “ Harrison executed her first back two and half pike in competition and scored big marks on her reverse dive after muffing it in the prelims.
Friesen was also happy with her performance.
“I was consistent,” she said. “In the final I want to be more confident on my dives.”
On men’s 10-metre tower, Maxim Bouchard of St-Constant, Que., was fourth in his semifinal and did not advance. He had reached the final six at the previous two Grand Prix.
“It was ordinary,” he said. “My third and fourth dives are the ones I need to improve the most.”
Competition continues Friday.
