Audrey Lacroix wins gold at U.S. Grand Prix
SANTA CLARA, California – Audrey Lacroix of Pont-Rouge, Que., won the gold medal Sunday in the women’s 200-m butterfly to conclude a successful meet for Canadian swimmers at a U.S. Grand Prix.
Lacroix, a two-time Olympian, clocked two minutes and 08.64 seconds for the win. Jasmine Tosky of the U.S., was second in 2:10.89 and Elizabeth Beisel of the U.S. third in 2:12.74.
“I showed a lot of power on the second and third lengths,” said Lacroix. “The field was fast so I really wanted to win this race. It gives me a lot of confidence with the world championships still six weeks away.”
In the 800-m freestyle, Gillian Ryan of the U.S., reeled in Alexa Komarnycky of Victoria over the final 200-metres to win the gold in 8:36.49. Komarnycky who led a big part of the race was second in 8:36.93 while Tabitha Baumann of Ottawa was sixth and Heather Maitland of Toronto ninth.
Other Canadian women’s results: Marni Oldershaw of Oakville, Ont., was seventh in the 200-m individual medley and Martha McCabe of Toronto eighth in the 100-m breaststroke.
On the men’s side, Richard Funk of Edmonton was sixth in the 100-m breaststroke and Zack Chetrat of Oakville ninth in the 200-m butterfly.
Canadian swimmers collected 11 medals at the four-day meet including four gold.
